What is the Academic Support Center?
The Academic Support Center (ASC) is an academic support unit within the Division of Student Affairs. Since its opening in 1950 as the Reading & Study Clinic, and later the Learning Development Center, the ASC has been serving the developmental education needs of the RIT and Rochester communities through diagnosis, instruction, and professional consultation.
Where is ASC?
The ASC is located on the second floor of the Eastman building. The main office number is 01-2309.
Who can use ASC services?
Most ASC services are open and free to all matriculated RIT students, including cross-registered NTID students, as well as RIT faculty and staff.
What kinds of services are offered by the ASC?
The ASC works in a variety of ways to increase students' effectiveness as learners. Students learn how to develop basic skills, enhance advanced skills, or cope with the academic environment. The ASC offers classes, workshops, and labs in reading, writing, mathematics, study skills, and alternative learning strategies.
What does it cost?
Most ASC services are free to all matriculated RIT students, faculty, and staff. Fees are charged in programs related to: Academic Success in College Conference, College Restoration Program, Learning Support Services.
How do faculty and students know what classes are being offered?
Each quarter the College Program distributes a schedule of classes and workshops to all students and faculty.
How can faculty refer students to the ASC?
A student with academic needs in a particular area can be sent directly to the appropriate lab or class. For information or for schedules of current quarterly offerings, students or faculty may go to the ASC office (GEM 01-2309) or call 475-6682 (V/TTY). Faculty may also contact any ASC faculty member.
How do students enroll in ASC classes?
Students are encouraged to sign up for classes and workshops in the ASC office, Eastman Building, 01-2309, 475-6682 (V/TTY). However, students may come to classes and workshops without prior registration.
How do students sign up for ASC Labs?
No appointment is necessary for the ASC Math Lab or Writing Lab. Both ASC labs are "drop-in" services. Instructors or tutors are available during all times when the labs are open. Students are helped on a first-come-first-served basis.
How can faculty members use ASC services?
In addition to referring students to the ASC, many faculty have benefited from ASC workshops, guest lectures, professional consultations, or assistance with curriculum development.
