General Education Course Credit

General Education courses are intended for the entire RIT student population.

All courses that carry general education course credit must meet specific RIT and New York State Education Department Criteria.

It is important to note the following:

  • RIT requirements, criteria and procedures for approval of a course that carries general education credit are found in RIT Educational Policy D1.F(4).
  • The RIT general education learning outcomes have been updated since policy D1.F(4) was approved. Please refer and use current RIT’s General Education Learning Outcomes.
  • Since policy D1.F(4) was approved, the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Guidelines were revised in 2009. Please refer to the new guidelines when proposing a course for general education credit. These new guidelines are found at the NYSED website.
