Development of Minors
A minor at RIT is defined as a thematically related set of academic courses (consisting of no fewer than 20 credit hours) leading to a formal designation on a student’s baccalaureate transcript.
The purpose of the minor is to broaden a student’s college education. Unlike program concentrations which allow students to focus on an area within or closely related to their program of study, a minor must be in a discipline or disciplines distinct from the home program.
Guidance and procedures for proposing a new minor is found in RIT Educational Policy D1.1.
Proposals for a minor should include:
- a general overview of the minor and the rationale for why a student might elect the minor
- a description of the minor requirements and prerequisites
- a schedule for when minor courses are offered (fall, winter or spring)
- course descriptions using the course proposal format
