Student/Advisor Partnership

What are my responsibilities as a CMS student?

Students are ultimately responsible for their degree completion. Make sure you are aware of your degree requirements and that the course you take meet those requirements. If questions arise, contact your advisor immediately.

As a CMS student, you will:

  • Develop a plan of study with your advisor
  • Prepare a resume and statement of educational and career goals
  • Complete and admissions application or  a change of program form
  • Request official transcripts from other colleges that you have attended

You should also be fully aware of important dates and deadlines during each academic quarter and calendar year. Important dates include the add/drop schedule; withdrawal policy and dates; first and last day of classes; and the course finals calendar. All of this information can be accessed through the RIT homepage or by contacting your academic advisor.

Advisor Commitment

CMS advisors recognize and value student diversity and therefore customize programs to fit your needs. The unique nature of CMS enables advisors to:

  • Provide one-on-one advisement in a variety of ways (in person, phone or online)
  • Assist students when identifying course work pertinent to their professional area(s) of interest
  • Act as a liaison between students and other campus resources
  • Evaluate transfer, military, advanced placement, life experience, CLEP, DANTES and PONSI credit
  • Continuously inform students of new program offerings

Advisor Response Time

Our academic advising role is to act as a mentor and advocate for you, as well as help you successfully complete your degree requirements. To that end, we are comitted to responding to you in a timely and effective manner. We commit to the following response times:

Phone Calls: 2 Business Days

Email: 2 Business Days

Letters of Recommendation: 10 Business Days

Plan of Study Draft: 2 Business Days*

*Advisors must have all necessary supporting materials and information from the student or supporting RIT offices (such as transcripts).
