Charles Moreland ’10 (multidisciplinary studies) walks on a railing and scales a wall while Andrew Salmon ’10 (multidisciplinary studies) jumps a vault and lands with a roll.
“We are not risk-takers,” Salmon says before demonstrating his next move. “We don’t want to get hurt.”
Moreland and Salmon have made a business by playing it safe in a sport that at first glance would make mothers cringe. It’s called parkour and their RocPK gym celebrated its first anniversary this spring. Parkour participants look at and react to the world differently. Instead of walking around obstacles, they jump or climb them. Curbs become balance beams. Park benches transform into vaults.
Rochester Institute of Technology was renewed as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute Education Center, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. RIT has been serving in this capacity for 10 years and offers training courses on OSHA standards and occupational safety and health issues to workers and employers throughout the region.
Since 2003, RIT’s center has served more than 4,000 individuals in general industry, service, building and construction industries. Courses are taught by RIT faculty and instructors in industry who have been selected for professional credentials, teaching ability and real-world experience, says Kitren VanStrander, director of the OSHA Education Center at RIT.
We are happy to announce that Mary Boyd has been named the Interim Director of the Center for Multidisciplinary Studies for the 2012-2013 academic year!
Samuel McQuade III, Ph.D., had his article Cyber and Internet Offenses published in The Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention from SAGE Publishing.
Tom Moran had the fourth and final volume in the series Writing for Success: An Engineer’s Guide published. The final volume, Writing for Life is available as en e-book through IEEE-USA.
We enjoyed our best turnout ever at the 9th Annual RIT OSHA Education Center golf outing with 40 people in attendance, including 10 women. There was outstanding OSHA representation from both the Buffalo and Syracuse offices, including some first-time participants, and Jennifer Lawless traveled all the way from Maryland to join us!
