As an industrial engineer, I am trained to see the Big Picture. In teaching, the Big Picture is how courses flow over a quarter and how they relate to each other. I rely on my IE training in designing lectures, assignments, and exams to balance content delivery and the students’ workload, and to show how the class fits into the overall course of study. The IE focus on how a system works, and how to make the system fit people (not the other way around!) is invaluable in developing new courses and curricula.
