For Terry Bruce, leaving a job better than he found it has been the hallmark of his career. When he joined the Educational Technology Center, much of the department’s services involved moving a TV/VCR cart from one classroom to another. In the time since, ETC has been instrumental in installing equipment across campus as well as supporting academic events and capital improvement projects.
Bruce, the director of Campus Learning Technologies in the ETC, retired in December after working at RIT for 27 years.
He initially worked in the Office of Development as the director of their systems and services, and then moved to Human Resources in the same type of position. From there, he became the Director of Operations for the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, before taking the reigns at ETC.
No matter the job, he’s always done his best to make it better when he left it than it was when he found it.
As the Director of Campus Learning Technologies, Bruce has helped ETC take care of the teaching and learning technologies in RIT’s classrooms, lecture halls and auditoriums on campus. These technologies include projectors, audio/visual technology and smart podiums. ETC also trains faculty members how to use the equipment.
In addition, ETC acts as designers or consultants for capital projects throughout the university. Whether it’s for a renovation of a college, lab, or conference room or for an entirely new building, ETC helps the university choose and install the technology for its best use.
Some of the projects that Bruce has overseen during his tenure at ETC include the addition of the Center for Biotechnology Education and Training (CBET) building, the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) building and renovations to the E. Philip Saunders College of Business.
Currently, ETC’s staff is involved in the cutting-edge teaching and learning technology studio in A400 in Wallace as well as the administrative services building, the Student Alumni Union pool renovation as well as several general purpose classrooms.
"The most important part of what we do is customer service" Terry says. "ETC is a service-oriented group and we take our duties and responsibilities very seriously."
