• Name
  • George Borrelli

  • Fellowship
  • Freeman-Asia 2011

  • Location
  • Shanghai, China

  • Award Amount
  • $3000

  • Experiences
  • In Shanghai, I am learning a ton of things: Chinese culture, language, problems, strengths and weaknesses compared to the US. I wanted to go so that I could immerse myself in the country that speaks the language that I am learning so that I could increase my fluency much faster than at home. I also am studying Asian history so being here and wandering around is kind of like independently studying all of this in the first person, rather than a book. Had I not won this scholarship, I definitely would not have been able to travel to China since the cost of the airfare (and the program) are very expensive and I have little savings of my own.

  • Advice for Applying for Fellowships
  • Take your time, start searching and applying as soon as possible. Procrastination will give you poor quality materials and you might miss out on the big scholarships which have deadlines sooner than the others. Be sure to write an outstanding and heart felt essay to convey all of your reasons for going abroad in a convincing manner.
