Resources

Here at the Study Abroad & Fellowships Office, our job is to assist you as you choose and apply for fellowships. The main way we do this is by one on one advising sessions, but we also provide online help to get you started. Take a look at the resources below as you are considering your fellowship application.

Tips for Competitive Fellowships Applications

  1. If you lack the time or passion for such a strenuous process, let it go. Competitive applications come from people who make a commitment, make it a priority and START EARLY.
  2. Talk to others who have won/applied for your fellowship and learn from their experiences.
  3. Some application processes can be quite rigorous. To stay on track, break down the process into manageable milestones
  4. Make sure you meet or are committed to all the fellowship requirements
  5. When asking for references/letters of recommendation:
    1. Choose an appropriate reference - one who meets the requirements of the application but can also attest to your abilities as relates to the application.
    2. Give your referee at least 2 weeks to write a letter and follow up with them.
    3. Give your referee a copy of your resume nd provide them with information about the program so the can tailor your letter.
  6. Request your official transcripts early from all necessary schools.
  7. When writing your essays or conducting your interviews:
    1. Know your audience and tailor your response to their focus.
    2. Communicate effectively with a clear intro, thesis statement and conclusion.
    3. Be specific - NO FLUFF
    4. Be compelling - tell your unique story
    5. Have several people edit your essays
  8. Meet several times with Jenny to know you are on the right track.
