IX. Appendix
Key People and Terms
Academic Conduct Committee
Each college or academic unit at RIT maintains an Academic Conduct Committee. The committee may be called upon to hear cases in which a student believes that a faculty member has improperly evaluated work or has infringed upon the student’s academic freedom; it may also be called upon to hear cases where any member of the academic community believes that a particular student has cheated, plagiarized, or performed any other act of academic dishonesty. In all cases, it is the responsibility of the committee to render fair and appropriate judgments reaffirming standards of integrity expected in the academic community. The number of members, term of service, and method of selection of the committee shall be determined by the members, faculty, and students of each college or academic unit.
Faculty Adviser
Faculty advisers are assigned to all graduate students. Typically, the student selects a faculty research adviser who then also acts as an academic adviser. Advisers are prepared to assist students with issues regarding curriculum requirements, elective choices, transfer options, RIT support facilities, and concerns of a more personal nature (such as managing your time effectively, making the adjustment to college life, or coping with the unexpected). We strongly urge you to establish a firm relationship with a faculty adviser soon after you begin your program of study.
Graduate Faculty
The term “graduate faculty” includes faculty members with direct appointments to the program in which you are enrolled as well as faculty members from other departments and colleges at RIT who have been appointed to the graduate faculty in that program.
Graduate Student Full-Time Equivalency
When you have completed course work for a degree but continue to work on your thesis or dissertation requirements, you may continue to qualify for full-time status by completing the Graduate Student Full-Time Equivalency Status form. This will entitle you to the services and privileges of the campus while you continue to work on your degree requirements. This form is available at http://www.rit.edu/academicaffairs/registrar/forms.html.
Research Committee: Ph.D. Program
Once you have passed the doctoral comprehensive exam and are well along in the process of formulating a dissertation research proposal (typically during the second or third year of study), you will, in consultation with your graduate faculty adviser, present a request to your graduate coordinator for the appointment of a research committee. The committee will include a minimum of four people, including your adviser, one other member of the graduate faculty, a person competent in the field of research (this committee member may also be a member of the graduate faculty), and the provost’s representative (“external chair”). The external chair must be a tenured member of the RIT faculty who holds a doctorate and is not a faculty member or graduate faculty member of your home department. Further, if your adviser is a member of the graduate faculty with an outside home department, then the external chair cannot have the same home department as your adviser. The external chair is appointed by the dean of graduate studies, subsequent to a request initiated by your graduate coordinator.
This research committee will supervise your research, which would include:
- reviewing the research proposal (typically as part of the Ph.D. candidacy exam)
- meeting with you during the course of your research
- conducting your dissertation defense.
Research Committee: MS Program
The MS thesis research committee is composed of a minimum of two people: the student’s graduate faculty research adviser and additional members who hold at least an MS in a field relevant to the student’s research.
