Science and Technology Entry Program
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does it cost anything to participate in STEP?
A: No. Students pay nothing to join or participate in STEP. All STEP activities are funded by the New York State Education Department.
Q: What is the meeting schedule?
A: There's no regular meeting schedule for the RIT STEP Program; however, each activity in STEP has its own schedule.
The schedules are determined by the individual(s) running the activity. Example: Students in Inventors Club may meet every Wednesday after school, but students
in the NOVA Academy may meet every Saturday.
Contact the STEP Program Coordinator at your school to get more information on schedules.

Q: How many activities may I participate in?
A: Each student may participate in as many activities as he/she wishes. But keep in mind that the schedules for some activities may conflict with each other.
Q: How will I know when the next activity is?
A: The Office of K12 Programs sends mail about each upcoming STEP activity. You can always check with your STEP Program
Coordinator to get the most up-to-date information.
Q: Why wasn't I selected to participate in a STEP activity?
A: Most STEP activities are available to registered STEP students on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, the STEP Program Coordinator may
use academic standing and recommendations as selection criteria. Example: There is one spot left to go on the Spring Break College Tours.
Student A and Student B sign up for the last spot. Student A returned all necessary paperwork first but received several failing grades on the last report card.
Student B has no failing grades and received positive recommendations from his/her counselor. Student B would be allowed to go on the trip before Student A.
