Academic Learning Communities
Academic Learning Communities (LC’s) are organized by major and all freshmen enrolled in the major are included in the learning community. Each learning community consists of 20-35 students from the major who share their Discovery class and at least one other class for the quarter. Some LC’s will continue into the winter and a few into spring quarter as well. The small class size and continuity of peers and faculty leads to relationships that build quickly and will often remain strong for the entire time that you are at RIT. Students in a learning community will have a team of professionals such as faculty, advisors, administrative staff, and peer mentors who are all focused on the student’s success.
Purpose & Benefits
You will begin your academic career as part of a cooperative, collaborative community, not as a solitary student knowing few other students. You will make friends with other students from your first day on campus. However, probably the biggest predictor of retention and academic sucess will be the close relationships you develop with faculty over the course of your first year.
