RIT Resources for New Faculty
Welcome New Faculty
Dear RIT Colleagues,
It is my distinct pleasure, on behalf of the Academic Senate, to welcome you to the RIT community. It is our sincere hope that as you begin your career here at RIT you feel supported in your work, valued as a colleague, and included in the shared governance process that has always been a part of RIT's culture. The Academic Senate is perhaps the most visible manifestation of Institute-wide shared governance, a fact that is demonstrated by the make up of the senate: faculty, staff, and administrators all have a seat at the governance table. Please see the following site for more information on the senate: http://www.rit.edu/academicaffairs/academicsenate/.
Each year the Academic Senate undertakes a series of charges that are solicited from the faculty and administration. Those charges are then given to a series of standing committees that reviews the charges and makes recommendations to the senate. Because of the critical importance of this work, it is important that we staff the standing committees with representatives from each of our colleges, and this is where I would invite your eventual participation as new faculty members. As you get settled in to your positions, perhaps you might consider serving on a standing committee. This is a good way to observe the inner workings of the governance process as well as to meet colleagues from other colleges.
Having done my due diligence by describing briefly the work of the senate and soliciting your eventual participation, let me now simply close by welcoming you with all possible warmth to the RIT community, and by wishing you every success in your new position. Please do take the time to get to know the senators from your particular college, and by all means, if you have questions or concerns, please do contact your senators, the members of the executive committee (contact information below), or Vivian Gifford, the senior staff assistant for the Academic Senate at 475-2016 or asenate@rit.edu. Thank you for your attention, and all the best for your first year.
