Honors Program Create & Solve Puzzles for Computing Class

Friday, May 5, 2017

In Professor Zack Butler’s honors course, Puzzles For Computing, students are learning algorithms to both solve and create puzzles. They explore how human strategies can be encoded in a program, and how human puzzle authors can work together with computer programs to create puzzles that are more interesting than either could construct on their own. Students are investigating logic puzzles, math puzzles, word puzzles, and even brand-new puzzle styles that they are designing. Students will team up to create a puzzle hunt (in the style of the MIT Mystery Hunt or Microsoft Puzzle Challenge) that will be solved and critiqued by another team in the class.
