Honors student, Charles Hem, volunteered as a ski instructor for the Shared Ski Adventures Program this winter with CP Rochester. Shared Ski Adventures is an Adaptive Learn to Ski Program that helps people with disabilities become independent skiers/snowboarders. It is the largest adaptive ski program in the Rochester area. Program participants ski at Swain Ski Resort in Western New York. Charles’ involvement in this program has had a huge positive impact on his life and allowed him to make a positive impact on others. Charles was paired with a student who has autism. Throughout the program, he saw this student grow through his struggles to depart from a ski lift at the beginning to being able to ski an intimate hill without falling. Charles developed and met fascinating veteran volunteer instructors whom he learned from. According to him, this is the most beneficial volunteer service he has completed. He plans to continue his service and recruit more RIT students to get involved in the program.
