Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Mashal Waqar, BS, computing security graduate (2017), has recently been named Young Leader of the Year at the prestigious Naseba Annual Global WIL Economic Forum for her efforts in leading the accessibility movement in media.

The Forum brings together over 500 global business leaders, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, NGOs, artists and youth, and champions diversity as the cornerstone of sustainable economic development. It is held under the patronage of His Excellency Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, United Arab Emirates. The Global WIL Achievement Awards are a highlight of the forum and acknowledges individuals and organizations for their impactful support of women’s empowerment.

Mashal Waqar was recognized as CTO and Co-Founder of ‘The Tempest’, one of the globe’s fastest growing media companies dedicated to diverse millennial women. Since the platform was founded in 2016, it is leading the way in providing a sounding board that diverse women can relate and contribute to, including those who are disabled. Mashal and her team are dedicated to prioritizing accessibility with all of their web content and actively incorporate disability into every initiative and product offering.

“As a company, we have a considerable amount of power in shifting norms and expectations. As such, we are prioritizing and employing techniques to make sure our content, in all formats, including audio and video, is fully accessible. Quite simply, we are here to prioritize accessibility because it is a human right,” she explains.

With 1.3 billion people registered disabled, the award recognized Mashal’s commitment to accessibility and her efforts in training other organizations to make information readily available for all and to understand more about inclusion. “Accessibility is important for everyone, because if you aren’t accessible you are stopping an entire population from consuming your information. Any company or organization can make small changes to have a huge impact,” Mashal concludes.

Under Mashal and her team’s leadership, The Tempest has amassed a following of 139,000 followers on Twitter and 413,000 followers on Facebook. Visit https://thetempest.co to find out more.
