SOIS Faculty Receives Grants for Comic Research

SOIS faculty member Daniel Worden was awarded funding for research and scholarship related to the study of comics. These interdisciplinary projects engage faculty and staff from RIT Libraries and the College of Liberal Arts.

Lucy Shelton Caswell Research Award from the Ohio State University's Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum (BICLM)

​SOIS faculty member Daniel Worden received a Lucy Shelton Caswell Research Award, to support his project "Oil Comics." In this project, Worden will document and analyze the ties between early comic book publishing and the oil industry, as well as the ways that fossil fuels have shaped representations of motion in comics. Worden is one of three inaugural award recipients who will travel to the BICLM The award supports researchers to travel to Columbus, Ohio to use the collections materials of the BICLM on site.

PLIG

​SOIS faculty member Daniel Worden received a PLIG Grant in support of his project "The History of Comics." Collaborating with Steven Galbraith (Cary Collection) and Rebekah Walker (RIT Libraries), Worden will teach projects-based class in spring 2019 using the Steven Cooper Collection of Comics in the Cary Collection, which contains every comic book from April 1956.

SRS Seed Money

​SOIS faculty member Daniel Worden received an SRS Seed Money Grant to develop his "History Cartoons" project, in which he is collaborating with Michael Brown (CLA, History Department), Tamar Carroll (CLA, History Department), Jody Sidlauskas (RIT Archive), and Becky Simmons (RIT Archive). This project will seek to digitize and analyze the John Scott Clubb and Elmer Messner editorial cartoon collections in the RIT Archive.
