E04.1 Policy for Faculty Extra Service Compensation and Summer Employment

Scope

This policy applies to all faculty who are classified by Human Resources as regular employees of the university.

I. Introduction

Faculty are compensated for work performed in accordance with a contract and/or a plan of work. This document sets forth the policy for compensating faculty for work performed that is in addition to Faculty workload assignments as outlined in contracts and/or plans of work.

II. General Provisions

  1. Compensation for Extra Service. Faculty shall receive additional compensation from RIT for extra service to RIT. The guidelines for the rate or amount of this additional compensation shall be consistent with the type of work performed, approved by the Office of the Provost and in accordance with the RIT Human Resources compensation guidelines, and shall be in writing and mutually agreed to by faculty and the appropriate college department head. Such writing shall be in the form of an amendment to a contract or a modification to a plan of work and shall be specifically labeled as extra service. Extra service that is part of federally sponsored activities shall comply with applicable federal and/or state laws.

  2. Compensation for Overload Teaching. Faculty shall receive additional compensation from RIT for overload teaching. The rate or amount of this additional compensation shall be approved by the Office of the Provost and in accordance with the RIT Human Resources compensation guidelines and shall be in writing and mutually agreed to by faculty and the appropriate college department head. Such writing shall be in the form of an amendment to a contract or a modification to a plan of work and shall be specifically labeled as overload teaching.

  3. Additional Professional Activity. Faculty shall not receive compensation from RIT for additional professional activity. Additional Professional Activity means an activity performed by faculty which is not extra service, overload teaching, or part of that faculty's plan of work. Additional professional activities are intended to enhance faculty's research and teaching capabilities or to provide public benefit to the community. Faculty shall be permitted allowances and scheduling flexibility for these additional professional activities, provided that it does not unreasonably interfere with faculty's ability to comply with the provisions of contracts and/or plans of work. All additional professional activities shall comply with RIT policy, as they may be amended from time to time, including but not limited to, C4.0-Individual Conflict of Interest and Commitment Policy, and E4.0 - Faculty Employment Policies.

  4. Interdepartmental Assignments. Except for incidental short-term assignments, faculty compensation and benefits for interdepartmental assignments shall not be absorbed by faculty's home department. These costs shall be absorbed by the department making the assignment.

  5. Work Assignment outside Contract Period. Faculty shall receive additional compensation for work assignments outside their contract period. The rate or amount of this additional compensation shall be in accordance with the RIT Human Resources compensation guidelines and shall be in writing and mutually agreed to by faculty and the appropriate college department chair. Such writing shall be in the form of an amendment to a contract or a modification to a plan of work and shall be specifically labeled as Work Assignment outside Contract Period.

  6. Teaching during Intersession. Faculty are expected to fulfill their responsibilities related to scholarship and service during Intersession. Teaching during intersession shall either be part of a plan of work or overload teaching.
