Scholarship, Funds and Grants

The School of Individualized Study awards scholarship money to students each year. Some scholarships are based on financial need and others are based on academic merit. Students need to meet all eligibility requirements and submit application materials by the deadline indicated in order to be considered for a scholarship. View scholarship, funds, and grants to learn about requirements, deadlines, and other pertinent information.

SOIS Student Council

The SOIS Student Council brings our students together to assist in promoting and empowering students to take an active role in both RIT and the school’s community.

Students can get involved in Student Council, two ways. One, they may participate as a general member or as a member of the E-Board.

  • General Members attend council meetings and participate in activates/events arrange and carried out by the SOIS Student Council.
  • E-Board Members may hold a position on the SOIS Executive Board, which consists of a president, vice president, event coordinator, and secretary. SOIS’s Student Government (SG) Senator Representative also participates on the Student Council E-board.

The role of the E-Board role is to organize and implement one event each semester (fall and spring), as well as host an exhibit at Imagine RIT: Creativity + Innovation Festival. E-Board members are responsible for attending admissions events, such as new student and transfer student open houses, orientation, as well other campus events where they help prospective students learn more about SOIS degree programs and can answer questions about the SOIS community. In addition, this group serves as a sounding board for SOIS faculty and staff looking for student perspective feedback. E-board elections are typically held in the spring for the upcoming academic year.

SOIS Student Government Senator Representative

Meeting taking place in a large conference room

RIT’s Student Government represents the interests of the university’s student body through the implementation of innovative programs, services, and initiatives that enrich student lives. Student Government is composed of an executive branch and a senate. The SG president, who is the head of the executive branch, is elected by the entire RIT student body each spring. Following the elections, the president appoints members of the executive (also known as the cabinet), which are then approved by the Senate. The Senate is made up of student senators that represent all eleven RIT colleges. Each senator is elected by the student body of their college and they represent the interests of their college’s student body. In addition to their role on SG, the SOIS senator also participates on the SOIS E-Board.

One of the things that we come back to as a team over and over again is the importance of collaboration space. Opportunities for students to meet each other, to exchange ideas, that’s the way in which you become emotionally intelligent. That’s the way in which you become a problem solver-is having time, a space and opportunity to engage one another.
