Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching
Teaching excellence has been formally recognized at RIT since 1965, when the Awards for Outstanding Teaching and their accompanying ceremony were established. The scope of the awards program was broadened in 1967 to include Distinguished Young Teachers. The program was further expanded in 1975 to better recognize the diversity of RIT’s education by providing a maximum of four awards to faculty members from various educational disciplines. Although the program has changed, the reasons behind the awards have not: To encourage the professional growth and development of RIT faculty and to specifically recognize those members of the academic body who contribute most to enhance student learning. The late M. Herbert Eisenhart, former president and board chairman of Bausch & Lomb, Inc., was a member of RIT’s Board of Trustees for more than 50 years. His contributions to RIT during that span were countless, and he was the recipient of the RIT Founders Awards in 1971. His commitment to RIT was further evidenced by his generous bequest that created the M. Herbert and Elsa Bausch Eisenhart Endowment Fund, which provides permanence to the Eisenhart Awards for Outstanding Teaching as well as a major scholarship fund.

Richard and Virginia Eisenhart Provost's Excellence in Teaching Award
Rochester Institute of Technology was selected several years ago to participate in the Sears-Roebuck Foundation’s Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award Program. Because the program, which was discontinued by Sears-Roebuck, was so successful and enthusiastically received at RIT, it was decided that the Provost’s Office would continue to fund the award each year, renaming it the Provost’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Richard and Virginia Eisenhart have continued the legacy of the Eisenhart family’s support of teaching and learning at RIT by endowing the Richard and Virginia Eisenhart Provost's Excellence in Teaching Award. In appreciation, this award has been renamed the Richard and Virginia Eisenhart Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Mr. Eisenhart, chairman emeritus of the Board of Trustees and member for 26 years, and Mrs. Eisenhart are also generous supporters of the Eisenhart Memorial Scholarship, the Nathaniel Rochester Society, the Athenaeum, and the Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt Interfaith Center. The Richard and Virginia Eisenhart Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching supports undergraduate education at RIT by recognizing the fundamental importance of the quality of teaching to the value of the education process; supporting faculty who have taught three years or less in their pursuit of excellence in teaching and leadership in the campus community; assisting the Institute in nurturing the academic climate that fosters teaching at its best; and enhancing teaching as a profession.

Provost’s Learning and Innovation Grant
The Provost's Office has set aside $85,000 to fund faculty initiatives designed to enhance student learning. Unlike college FEAD grants which focus on improving teaching and individual faculty expertise, these grants focus on student learning. The learning innovations program has two types of grants: Proof of Concept (proposals that intend to develop a "proof of concept" or experimental project) and Adaptation & Implementation (proposals that adapt and implement a learning innovation on a broad scale). Proposals are solicited in December.

2005-2006 Carnegie Scholars Program
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) announce a call for Carnegie Scholars for 2005-2006. NCA and the communication discipline were well represented in past cohorts of Carnegie Scholars.
Faculty members from any discipline or professional field, and from all institutional types, are invited to apply for participation in the 2005-2006 Carnegie Scholars Program. Each applicant must propose a scholarship of teaching and learning inquiry project that addresses the cohort theme of undergraduate integrative learning.
