RIT AAUP JANUARY 18, 2008: 1:00-2:00 P.M.

Officers in Attendance:  T. Policano; J. Aumer; V. Serravallo

I.  Provost Search

The faculty is strong encouraged to read and contribute to the Chapter online forum on this important issue.

II.  Presentation of 18-Point Plan on Contingent Faculty to Academic Senate

Reaction to the Chapter’s 18-point plan regarding the working conditions of contingent faculty consisted of the Provost’s openness and acknowledgment that while conditions at RIT might be relatively good, it does not mean they can’t be improved.  Also, one dean suggested there should be deadlines for adjunct contracts and deadlines for announcement of courses to be taught by adjuncts.

The Executive Committee of the Academic Senate will present some of the points of the Plan to President Destler.

Meanwhile, our search continues for an appropriate instrument to survey contingent faculty.

III.  Dishonorable Conduct Committee

Work continues on formulating a process to handle disputes.  “Alternative Dispute Resolution” is one model being considered.  It entails three levels of review.  The first level includes three processes:  dispute begins with the Ombuds Office; if settlement is not reached, the next step is mediation; and arbitration occurs next if necessary.  Secondly, the Provost reviews the outcome of the Ombud’s Office, or mediation or arbitration.  Finally, if no agreement is reached, the matter goes before the President.

IV.  Benefits Advisory Group

AAUP members are strongly encouraged to serve on this committee.  Contact the Human Resources Department directly.

Next Chapter meeting:  Friday, January 18, 12 to 1 PM, SAU Clark B.
