FEMA Official Praises RIT Program

FEMA Official Praises RIT Online Emergency Management Program

Stephen Sharro, Deputy Superintendent of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Emergency Management Institute, visited Rochester Institute of Technology to review the six-course Disaster and Emergency Management Certificate program, which can be completed entirely through online learning—any time, anywhere.

Sharro called RIT's distance-delivered emergency management certificate "a unique, high quality opportunity for emergency managers seeking to enhance their professional skills and credentials. "

Sharro called RIT's distance-delivered emergency management certificate "a unique, high quality opportunity for emergency managers seeking to enhance their professional skills and credentials." He said this program will be especially useful to emergency managers who, because of time or place constraints, do not have access to advanced training on campus or other time- and place-bound settings. RIT's program is the only complete EM certification program composed of college credit courses available in an online-learning format.

RIT’s online certification program consists of six college-credit courses including Earth Science I, Manmade Hazards, Emergency Management Laws and Regulations, Emergency Planning and Methodology, Emergency Operations, and Terrorism. The certificate can be completed as a free-standing credential or used as a concentration in RIT's individualized and flexible associate’s or bachelor’s degrees in applied arts and science. These degrees also can be completed entirely through distance learning. Course materials on video tape, online and in print formats were demonstrated for Sharro by Fred Mis.

Sharro saw RIT's distance-learning student support system and toured RIT 's extensive distance-learning production facilities.
