Scott J. Anson, Ph.D., is an associate professor and serves as program chair for manufacturing engineering technology in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. Previously Anson was employed by Endicott Interconnect (formerly IBM) as an Advisory Engineer for Process Development and New Process Introduction. Anson brings over eight years of industry experience to RIT where he has been a faculty member for the past six years. His primary research focus is in electronics manufacturing: process development; failure analysis; and materials characterization. Technical subjects: soldering processes, lead free solder, wave soldering, reflow, Surface Mount Technology (SMT), reliability evaluation, new process introduction, applied statistics and design of experiments (DOE). Growth areas include general manufacturing process development and control, including design of experiments, manufacturing vitality and pedagogy in the aforementioned. Anson also serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Applied Science and Engineering Technology. He is an active member of Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA), advisor to RIT student chapter of SMTA, Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), Reviewer IEEE Transaction on Electronics Packaging Manufacturing Journal 2008-present, reviewer ASME InterPACK Conference 2009. Amanda Bao, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety Department.  She joined RIT in 2010.  Prior to her position at RIT, she was a bridge structural engineer at Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. and Michael Baker Corporation.  She is a licensed professional engineer in Colorado, United States.  At RIT, she teaches structural engineering courses including structural analysis, dynamics, structural loads and systems, steel design, reinforced concrete design and timber design.  Her research interests include experimental and numerical modeling of infrastructure materials, soil-structure interaction, seismic behavior of bridges and soil liquefaction.  She is an active member in American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Recruitment and retention of female students in Engineering Technology has been a major area of interest for me. I am a founding member and have remained actively involved in Women In Technology (WIT) at RIT. WIT is a group that was formed in 2003 to provide both social and academic support to female students enrolled in engineering technology disciplines. The objective of WIT is to help retain female engineering technology students with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of female graduates in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Civil, Electrical, Computer, Telecommunications and Packaging Science. Within WIT, I am the coordinator of the Girl Scouts in Technology Days offered three times per year on campus. This highly successful outreach program, aimed at girls in grades 4-7 attempts to show girls in this age group that science can be both interesting in fun and, most importantly, that females can be scientists and engineers. The Girls Scouts in Technology Days are currently being funded by a grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

My scholarly work involves the design and implementation of embedded systems, specifically with applications in the fields of power and energy and entertainment.

The project I am currently working on is the hardware implementation, in an FPGA, of a Fourier Series Waveform Classification algorithm for Digital Signals.

I am also developing a set of modules that can be used to teach and integrated hardware/software approach in embedded systems. Each module includes lecture material, questions and a hands-on demonstration. The ultimate goal for this set of modules is to be published as a textbook.

Steve M. Ciccarelli is an associate professor for Electrical Engineering Technology. He has been at RIT for seven years and previous to his current position, was an instructor of Electrical Engineering at RIT. His research area focuses on Ultra-Narrow Band Radar and Tomographic Imaging which involves many of the same topics that are fundamental to the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department's areas of distinction. For example, RF/microwave component and subsystem level work, high-frequency circuit design and analysis as well as communication systems are all central to the concept of the "Smart Power Grid" being developed. In addition, Ciccarelli's research area offers additional challenges and opportunities in the areas of signal processing and system-level design, analysis and integration that are key to the technical side of entertainment engineering.

Some areas of real-life application for this technology are: RF sensors and networks for threat detection, ground penetrating radar for rescue and recovery, and high-resolution imaging systems for border security. This research requires a great deal of system-level design, analysis, and the integration of technologies including RF/MEMS and sensors. The spatial diversity requirement is likely to necessitate sensor networking and communications on a broad scale.

David Crumb is an associate professor in the Hospitality and Tourism Management  Department in the School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation.  He has been teaching at RIT since 1988.  Previously Crumb was the Vice President and General Manager of the Sheraton Needham and General Manager of the Rochester Airport Marriott.  His research focus is to identify the competencies for successful global hospitality managers.    He is a board member of the Rochester Hotel and Lodging Association and has been awarded the Norman Miles Outstanding Professor Award.

Elizabeth M. Dell is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing & Mechanical Engineering Technology and Packaging Science Department and also serves as the Undeclared Engineering Technology Program Chair. She has been teaching at RIT since 2006 and previously was the Materials Development and Product Design Engineer for Toyota, General Motors and Delphi.

Dell's research is focused on the characterization of biodegradable plastics, environmental considerations in materials selection for product design, characterization and failure analysis of polymer based products and materials. Additionally, she is very involved in the retention of 1st and 2nd year students, women and minorities; the development of effective teamwork skills in engineering education and outreach to K-12 students and educators. Diaz, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing & Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department.  He joined RIT in July, 2012 and previously was a research associate in the School of Packaging Science at Michigan State University.  His research interests include packaging technologies based on plastic materials, bio-based plastics and composites, nano-technologies applied to packaging systems,  microcellular plastics and design of Experiments (DOE).  Diaz is an active member of the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE); the Institute of Packaging Professionals (I0PP); and MSU Packaging Alumni Association.  He was the guest speaker at the Spring 2011 Packaging Seminar Series, School of Packaging, Michigan State University. “Microcellular PLA/Cellulosic Fiber Composites Foamed with Supercritical CO2 Through a Continuous Extrusion Process.”   He won Best Student Paper Award-SPE-ANTEC 2009, Vinyl Division C.A. Diaz and L.M. Matuana, and was awarded the best master thesis in the mechanical engineering department awarded by the alumni association of mechanical engineers, CIMANDES, May 2006, Bogotá, Colombia.

J. Grant Esler is certified in Industrial Hygiene, Safety and in Ergonomics. Upon graduating from the University of Michigan with a Master of Public Health degree in Industrial Hygiene he worked for nearly 30 years at Eastman Kodak Company as Industrial Hygiene Group Leader, Manager of Health, Safety and Environmental Training and Education, Business Unit HSE Manager, and Ergonomics Function Leader.  Since leaving Kodak he has worked as an individual health and safety consultant, powerplant Sr. EHS Spcialist for Duke Energy and Director of Health and Safety for a regional asbestos abatement and building demolition firm, Environmental Remediation Services Inc.  He has been active with the AIHA (American Industrial Hygiene Association) as Chair of the Training and Communication Methods technical committee and member of the Construction committee and the Ergonomics committee at the national level and President of the local section.  On many occasions he has spoken and conducted workshops for the AIHA on training management systems and health and safety metrics.

Research interests include: Open channel flow (turbulence characteristics) including effect of seepage and ice cover, two and three dimensional scour studies including scour by impinging jets and hydraulic model wave study of open and closed cell cable concrete block mats.

Md Abdullah Al Faruque, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety Department. Previously, he was a lecturer in the department and joined RIT in 2008. Ron Fulle is an associate professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department. He has taught at RIT since 1998. Previously he was an executive with AT&T. He teaches disciplines that he practiced in industry to both on campus and to on line undergraduate and graduate telecommunications students. Fulle's special areas of interest and courses taught include: Network Planning & Design, Computer Networking, Next Generation Networks and Telecommunications Policy, Regulation and Law. Joshua Goldowitz is a professor and the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for Environmental Management in the Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety Department. Goldowitz joined RIT in 1993 and previously worked for the H&A of New York in Rochester as a senior hydrogeologist/project manager. His research interests include developing curriculum and teaching courses in a growing department. Techniques for active learning include lectures, demonstrations, multimedia presentation, calculation practice sessions, computer and field laboratory sessions. Goldowitz is also President for the Hydro-Logic Corporation in Rochester, NY.

Daniel L. Goodwin, Ph.D., is a full professor in the Packaging Science Department. He also serves as the Director of Research for Packaging Science. Goodwin joined RIT in 1975 and previously served as the Chair of the Packaging Science Department. His research is focused on packaging for distribution — research in field measurement, laboratory simulation of the transportation environment and performance testing of product/package systems. Goodwin is also interested in shock and vibration research — cushion performance, compression strength of shipping containers, fatigue damage boundary and dynamic stack resonance testing as well as packaging and the environment — source reduction, recovery technologies and package costs. He is an active member of the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes, the International Journal of Packaging Technology and Science, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the International Safe Transit Association and the Institute of Packaging Professionals.

Research Interests include: Packaging for distribution — research in field measurement, laboratory simulation of the transportation environment and performance testing of product/package systems.

Martin E. Gordon is an associate professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering/Packaging Science Department. He has been teaching at RIT since 1995.

Martin is interested in bridging the gap between classroom learning and industrial application. He has been the faculty advisor for RIT's well-known Baja SAE team since its inception in 1995 and RIT's NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative since 2004. In addition, he was the chief organizer for two Baja SAE international competitions. Martin's other interest areas are the scholarship of service; engineering and technology education challenges for deaf and hard of hearing students; the academic performance of student athletes and forensic engineering. Additionally, Martin has been involved in many forensic engineering investigations. He has provided affidavits and actual courtroom testimony in dozens of cases. He is one of only approximately 400 board certified forensic engineers in the United States. Certification is given by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards through the National Academy of Forensic Engineering. Martin also maintains an active consulting practice and provides coop and full-time employment opportunities for students and graduates. He provides valuable mentoring to students and new graduates in making the transition from academia to industry. Consulting specialties include Finite Element Analysis, Aerospace Structural Analysis, Thermal Analysis and Vibration. Martin is an active member of National Academy of Forensic Engineers — NAFE, Society of Automotive Engineers — SAE, American Society for Testing and Materials — ASTM, American Society of Engineering Educators — ASEE, National Society of Professional Engineers — NSPE and the New York State Engineering Technology Association — NYSETA.

Christopher M. Greene, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He joined RIT in 2009 and was previously an assistant professor in the Industrial and Mechanical Engineering Departments at the University of Alabama. Greene's research interests include, but are not limited to Manufacturing Systems, Quality Engineering, Statistics, DOE, Six Sigma, Electronic Manufacturing, Taguchi Methodology, Agile Manufacturing, Lean Manufacturing, and Lean Six Sigma. She has been at RIT since 2007 and was previously the International Environment, Health & Safety Standards Manager at United Technologies/Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Division. I developed a computer simulation model to simulate traffic behavior at Merges on Expressways and Highways. The model was calibrated and validated using field data. The simulation model has been applied to develop regression models to predict delay and capacity at freeway and highway merges.
I taught at the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Basra-Iraq. I have compiled Civil Engineering Specifications in Iraq.

John-Paul Hatala, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Service Systems. He joined RIT at the start of the 2010-2011 academic year. Hatala is the founder of the Social Capital Development firm Flowork International. His academic research focuses on social networking behaviors, social capital, human resource development, career development and the transition to the labor market. To date, Hatala has developed a number of innovative systems and assessment tools including; Social Networking Management System (includes network analysis and network monitoring system), Strategic Job Search Management System (includes a monitoring system for labor market re-entry) and a series of assessments including the BEST for adults and BEST for youth (Barriers to entrepreneurship success tools), as well as the SELF (Social Exploration Learning Form). His latest book is entitled "The Strategic Networker: A Learner's Guide to Effective Networking."

Jon Horne is an assistant professor in the Department of Service Systems in the School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation.  He has been with RIT since 2002. Mark J. Indelicato is an associate professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department. He has been at RIT since 1989. Previously, he was a Business Systems Communications Engineer for NEC America. Currently, Indelicato is researching Real Time Audio Collaboration (RTAC) and the feasibility, logistics and implementation of live recording sessions carried and delivered over IP networks. Recording engineers and musicians would be in disparate locations anywhere in the world where they have access the commodity or Internet 2. It is the expectation that the commodity internet would not be the best choice for this application at this point. Research would begin using Internet 2.

Anomaly Detection for Music

Using the D-Transform Anomaly Detection/Classification (ADC) algorithm to profile sections of popular music, Indelicato will be studying consistencies and inconsistencies in digital music to determine if common traits that can be identified. Various parameters will be changed in order to determine statistical, repeatable factors that separate average and exceptional music.

He plans to show if there exists consistently observable characteristics of popular songs. The "hook" or clearly identifiable piece of hits songs will be analyzed using the D-Transform Anomaly/ Detection/Classification (ADC) algorithm of Chance Glenn, Ph.D. It will be determined if these characteristics are consistent within genres of music or across genres. The Top 10 songs in specific categories, according to Billboard, will be the source of our sample pool of music for this initial investigation. Once a robust set of profiles are developed, we will use Prof. Warren Koontz's clustering algorithm to determine if these profiles tend to "group." This will lead to a method to predict if music will be popular based on the proximity to established profiles of already accepted popular music.

Deanna M. Jacobs is a professor in the Packaging Science Department and serves as the graduate program chair for Packaging Science. Jacobs has been at RIT for 24 years.

Her research interests include the life cycle issues in packaging systems, packaging and sustainable consumption, and packaging systems optimization. William P. Johnson, Esq., is a full professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department and started teaching at RIT in 1989. He is also an attorney and counselor-at-law in the state of New York and a municipal consultant for Wireless Site Zoning. Previously, Johnson was a Vice President/Director of Engineering. Johnson's work is focused on legal/regulatory and engineering aspects of technology deployment (IP, products liability, municipal zoning/planning issues, etc) with emphasis on wireless communication systems and RF/microwave passive components. He is a an active member of the New York State Engineering Technology Association, IEEE, New York State Bar Association, Monroe County Bar Association and the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers.

Thomas Kausch is a lecturer in the Packaging Science Department. He is also the Manager of the department's Packaging Labs. Kausch has employed by RIT since 2007. He is primarily interested in package distribution research and testing. Kausch is an active member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), Advisory Board, Past-Presidents and the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) Member, Cert. Sungyoung Kim, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department.  He joined RIT in August 2012 and was most previously a research associate for Yamaha Corporation in Hammamatsu, Japan.  Initiated from working experience of a broadcasting audio engineer, Kim studied interaction of capturing methods and musical contents and their influence on listener’s preference of multichannel-delivered sound fields during his Ph.D. study. Later Kim was invited to Yamaha Corporation to investigate various rendering methods for listeners’ enhanced auditory impressions. His recent interests cover the auditory depth control integrated with 3-D visual display, the perceptual process and the associated attributes that provide convincing immersive sound fields, the brain response to immersive sound field, and the training methods of faster acquisition of critical listening ability.  Kim is an active member of the Audio Engineering Society and was awarded the Japan Award in 2009 by the Japanese Audio Engineering Society.

Spencer Kim, Ph.D., is a member of the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He is also the Associate Director for the American Packaging Corp. Center for Packaging Innovation, a role he has held since 2006 when he joined RIT. Previously, he was a senior engineer at L.G. Semicon, South Korea. Kim's research is focused on research and development in bio degradable plastics, bio degradable blended composites, and recycling plastics, materials characterization, engineering materials for design and process design and failure analysis. Rick M. Lagiewski is a lecturer in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department in the School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation.  He has been teaching at RIT since 2001.  Lagiewski’s research and teaching interests include: destination development, resort management, tourism in transitional economies, organizational change and creating service competitiveness through creative practices. He led a project for the East West Institute on cross-border institution building for tourism between Bosnia, Montenegro and Croatia.  Over the last four year Lagiewski has been an active scholar in delivering papers at the European Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators (EuroCHRIE)conference in such locations at; Turkey, France, Greece and Dubai. Topics have ranged from issues relating to medical tourism, experiential marketing and public private efforts in tourism development. James H. Lee, Ph.D., joined the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department in 2009 as an assistant professor. He joined RIT in 2007 as research faculty in the Golisano Institute for Sustainability. Lee's research interests are focused on natural gas fueled engine development, small aircraft engine development, and energy systems and fuel cell systems. Lee is an active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Automobile Engineers and is a professional engineer registered in the state of New York. Lee is an Eisenhower Fellow for Transportation Studies.

William M. Leonard, is an associate professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department and serves as Program Chair for Mechanical Engineering Technology. He has been at RIT since 1997. His areas of interest and research focus on advanced product design, rapid development and product prototyping and innovative engine design. Leonard is an active member of ASME and ASEE.

Ti-Lin Liu is an associate professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology / Packaging Science Department. He has been teaching at RIT since 1987. Previously he was the Chair Professor of the Mechanics Department at Shanghai University of Technology. His areas of interest include finite element analysis with ALGOR, computer simulation with working model and Matlab/Simulink, numerical analysis, solid mechanics, heat transfer and system dynamics/vibration. Liu is an active member of the New York State Engineering Technology Association. He has been the recipient of teaching awards in China and was the sole recipient of the 2001 Annual Grant Reward from MSC Software Corporation, San Mateo, CA.

Carl A. Lundgren is a professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He has been at RIT for over 28 years. Previously, he served as Lower Division Program Chair for Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology. His areas of interests include alternative energy systems, HVAC composites and biofuels. Scholarly works are in two areas; pedagogy, engaged learning through projected based learning and undergraduate research/product development; and bio-ethanol from ensiled biomass. Lundgren is an active member of ASEE, ETA and a member of the Advisory Board of Empowerus Tools (alumni owned and specializing in adaptive tools). He is also a three-time winner of NYSERDA Design prizes related to Solar Design. Lundgren has also been a past winner of the New Residential Solar Design Competition, the Commercial Builders Solar Design Competition and the Residential Retrofit Solar Design Competition.

Eldred Majors is a lecturer in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department. He has been lecturing part-time at RIT since 1981, and was previously an adjunct faculty since 1977. He also worked for Eastman Kodak as an Engineering Manager. His research interests focus on basic electrical theory, motors, power and the success of freshmen coming in to his classes. Drew N. Maywar, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department having joined the department in 2009. Previously, Maywar was a Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories - Lucent Technologies and a Scientist at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics. At Bell Laboratories, he prototyped their next generation DWDM, 10-and-40-Gb/s, Raman-amplified fiber-optic transmission system and earned the Central Bell Labs Teamwork Award on return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying transmission. Maywar serves as an Overseas Editor for the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics and has earned several awards for research and education in Japan, including a Fulbright fellowship for laser-physics research and Japanese-culture study at Osaka University’s Institute of Laser Engineering, a "US-Japan Cooperative Agreement on Photonic Memory Devices" grant from the US National Science Foundation for research at the University of Tokyo, and the University of Rochester's Take-Five Scholarship for Japanese language and cultural studies at Nanzan University. He is the co-author of over 40 peer-reviewed journal papers in the fields of fiber-optic communication systems, all-optical signal processing, photonics and opto-electronics, optical phenomenon, and nonlinear optics. Within these fields, he has also received funding as Principal Investigator from both the US National Science Foundation and the US Naval Air Systems Command. Maywar holds two US patents on all-optical memory devices and has co-authored a book chapter on active optical resonators. Maywar is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of America (OSA).

Michael P. Medlar is a lecturer in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He joined RIT in 2010 and previously worked as an engineer at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory for almost eight years. His research interests include mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and two-phase flow. Medlar has been honored as an RIT Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award and the William F. Halbleib Prize for Excellence in Mechanical Engineering Dynamics.

Robert Merrill, is a professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He has been at RIT for over 37 years and during his tenure has also served as the MET Department Chair and MET Program Chair. Merrill's work is focused on the reliability of complex repairable systems and teaching engineering mechanics. He is a an active member of the ASME, ASEE and NYSETA. Additionally he serves on the State University of New York Canton and Morrisville MET Industrial Advisory Boards. Merrill is also a member of Pi Tau Sigma.

Kereilemang Khana Nthoiwa, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral associate in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department.  She joined RIT in July 2012 and was previously a postdoctoral researcher in the Packaging Science program a the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where she taught classes and conducted research and industry projects on food packaging.  Her research is focused on packaging technologies for shelf stable foods, particularly performance of plastic packaging materials during processing using novel food processing techniques (such as microwave and high pressure sterilization) and during long term storage. Additionally Nthoiwa is focused on the correlation of quality and shelf life of packaged foods with packaging material characteristics as well as the development and evaluation of antimicrobial packaging for food applications. She is a professional member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP), Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and International Microwave Power Institute (IMPI).

David Orlicki, Ph.D., is a lecturer in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department having joined RIT in 2009. Previously he was an adjunct professor. His areas of interest include electronic design, servomechanism design and embedded systems design. He has won the Kodak Doctoral Award, is a member of the Eastman Kodak Inventors Hall of Fame—with over 20 US Patents—has won the Kodak Outstanding Innovation Award, Photographic Manufacturers Association Product of the Year Award and the MIT Electrical Engineering Teaching Assistant of the Year.

Michael J. Parthum, Sr., is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department and serves as the program chair for Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technology. His field of research for the past five years has been in MEMS (micro electrical mechanical systems) and charge injection technology. He is currently working on research projects in the fields of MEMS and RF-ID. Parthum has staff access to the SMFL's cleanroom where he is certified on 17 tools and super-user on 9 tools in the Fab. He has developed a new method for stress mitigation and enhanced strength in free standing MEMS structures (patents filed). Additionally, Parthum has developed a new method for temperature sensing in MEMS devices for RF-ID. His areas of interest include thin films / composite materials and glassy metals and he is also working developing and implementing Multi-Media based tools to enhance the students learning experience. This includes video presentations; web based contacts, and self-study to promote life-long learning. Parthum also has a strong interest in the Design for Life philosophy, in that with the limited resources that exist on this planet, plus the problems with disposal (landfill) and the costs of remanufacturing/recycling, greater focus should be made at the design phase of a project/product to consider the "useful life" of that product. He has also been working on advancements in motorcycle safety and the applications of Alternative Powered Vehicles. Published work includes Stress Mitigation in Thin Films and MEMS Devices; Enhanced Strength in Thin Films and MEMS Devices; Teaching and Tablets; using tablet computers in the classroom and Motorcycle Helmet Testing: Procedures and Helmet Technology.

Karen Proctor is a professor on the faculty in the Packaging Science Department. She has been at RIT since 1983. This includes tenure as chairs of both the graduate and undergraduate programs. Previously, Proctor was a packaging professional at both the Xerox and Amway Corporations. Additionally, she actively consults for various companies. Her areas of expertise include distribution, process control, sustainable packaging innovation, and packaging at the point of purchase. She has the distinction of developing and teaching the first packaging class designed for the RIT course titled Space Tourism. Karen spent the 1991 school year in Melbourne, Australia where she helped develop the first packaging degree program in Australia at the Victoria University. In 2007, she was a Visiting Professor in the Packaging Engineering Program at The State University of New Jersey-Rutgers, Biomedical Engineering. She also developed the RIT Packaging Science Executive Leader International program. In 2006 - 2007, Karen was on sabbatical at the Colgate-Palmolive Corporation as Director of Homecare Packaging and a member of the Colgate Sustainable Packaging Taskforce (August 2006 - July 2007). She was instrumental in the development of the Global Sustainable Packaging Strategy for Colgate-Palmolive. Her most recent developmental activities at include working with the RIT Golisano Institute for Sustainability (www.sustainability.rit.edu) to expand and develop packaging related research projects in sustainability. This includes two recent undergraduate research projects to utilize the Wal-Mart Scorecard to design more sustainable innovative packaging. In addition, she is consulting for a number of companies to meet the sustainability issues in packaging mandated by global retailers. Her goal in the Packaging Science Program is to enhance the educational environment of sustainable packaging innovation through the use of applied tools. Proctor is an active member of many packaging professional associations; American Society for Testing and Materials, Institute of Packaging Professionals, International Association of Packaging Research Institutions, International Safe Transit Association, National Institute of Packaging, Handling and Logistics Engineers, and Women in Packaging.

Currently, she is the Educational VP for International Safe Transit Association and is actively involved in the development of packaging standards to reflect "good sustainability practices" in the Wal-Mart supply chain: Sam's Club test procedure development program (www.ista.org/SamsClubProject.htm). Karen is a packaging sustainability advocate for designing "Just Right Packaging" to meet the supply chain requirements. Over her extensive career, Karen has received many honors and awards from her affiliations in professional organizations.

Alan D. Raisanen, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing & Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department.  He joined RIT in 2001 and was most recently the Technical Director for RIT’s NYSTAR IT Collaboratory.  His research currently involves developing micro-electro-mechanical (MEMS) devices for mechanical, fluidic, and optical applications. Some applications include micropumps for human-implantable drug delivery or analytical lab-on-a-chip devices, dielectric devices for harnessing light pressure to provide mechanical lift analogous to an airplane’s wing, mechanical optical devices to replace the natural human eye lens with an artificial implantable prosthesis that restores the natural accommodating (focusing) ability, and electromechanically-driven micromirrors that can be used to steer multiple optical beams for telecommunications, display, and spectroscopic imaging systems. In order to make these devices practical, I am also engaged in research to characterize the fundamental mechanical behaviors of the thin film materials used to fabricate these devices. I am also involved in materials processing and device fabrication of photovoltaics and nanomaterials, specifically in developing manufacturable processes and process flows for devices using these materials. Some of these materials are being used in collaborative RIT Nanopower Research Laboratory research in photovoltaics and Lithium battery technologies. Finally, I am developing new processing tool technologies (primarily plasma deposition and etching tools) that are necessary for fabricating micromechanical devices from silicon as well as other more exotic materials. These tools require extensive work in vacuum technology, machine design, robotics, welding and machining, making them ideal vehicles for self-contained co-op studies, senior design, and multidisciplinary design projects.

Rogers's research interests include performance assessment and evaluation of critical infrastructures, construction, operations, and maintenance of critical infrastructures, technology assessment in developing countries. Joseph M. Warren Sackler is an associate professor in the Hospitality and Service Management Department and has been at RIT since 1984.  His scholarly work focuses on cost control in the foodservice industry.  Sackler is also a contributor to Restaurant Startup and Growth Magazine.  Currently, Sackler is on the advisory committee for NRA for Alcohol Awareness certification and exams.

Dr. Schneider’s research interests include critical infrastructure (community resiliency & sustainability), Hazardous Materials/Process Safety, and Risk and Decision-making.

Dr. Schneider is a full professor and the Russell C. McCarthy endowed chair in CAST.  She joined RIT full time in fall 1997, creating and teaching courses in corporate EHS management system design, occupational health &  safety and risk management. She previously served CAST as the faculty associate for scholarly affairs, guiding scholarship & research with CAST.  She is the Region 2 OSHA Ed center  Technical PI, and is a member of the NIH peer review for her health and risk expertise.  She has served on the NIOSH - National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health NORA (research agenda) review committee, testified before the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure concerning infrastructure risk management, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Offshore Windfarm Safety & Health.  She also serves as treasurer of the Genesee Valley Safety Conference Board, and is a former chemist for the local hazmat team.

Previous to RIT, Dr. Schneider was the Director of EHS for ITT/Goulds Engineered products (Fluids) Division, Safety & Health Manager for Mobil, and an Environmental Engineer for ITCorp/ Eastman Kodak Company.  She earned her doctorate (Sc.D.) from UMASS Lowell, her MS in Industrial Hygiene from University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, and her BA in Comprehensive Science: Chemistry & Biology from Roberts Wesleyan College. Her recognitions include being the only person to certify three separate facilities to OSHA VPP STAR status (best in class), Commendation for meritorious service for hazmat response, NYS Pollution Prevention award, ITT excellence in engineering award and multiple nominations for the Eisenhart Award.

Michael Slifka is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He joined RIT in 2006 as a tutor in the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree from Purdue University. Slifka's research interests focus on changing the manner in which engineering students are taught. Additionally, he feels it is important that today's students understand the influence they can have in tomorrow's world. He works to instill a passion to change current products and technologies for better or new uses, breaking currently accepted paradigms and creating new ones.

Product design is another area of focus for Slifka. He has over 30 years in industry, 23 of which were in interdisciplinary product design crossing industries such as consumer, medical instrumentation, military, aerospace, and heavy industry products, qualifies me as a strong resource for today's students. He also serves as a research source for an aerospace company. In his work, Slifka has investigated new technologies for use in electronic products. The goal of this work is to increase the ability to effectively cool today and tomorrow's electronic/electrical systems. During this work, the manner in which products are designed was investigated and a recommendation was submitted for improving their design process to be more effective, yet vastly, more efficient.

Slifka is an active member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He has been nominated for RIT's prestigious Eisenhart Excellence in Teaching Awards and received a PLIG Grant.

Underhill has been teaching at RIT since 1996.  Her research interests include a NIH Stimulus Grant application jointly developed with RIT health alliance partner Rochester General Health Systems for Comparing Adult Non-pharmacologic Diabetes Interventions Participation.  Her work’s focus is on the prevention of obesity/ diabetes for children through achieving healthy lifestyles and Healing Hospitality Innovation in the provision of health care services.   Additionally she is focused on the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services, Women and Infant and Children (WIC) training grant and research grant, Principal Investigator.  Underhill is currently involved with the following project:

Type II Diabetes Research Project

Joined the Rochester Area Diabetes Prevention Coalition, funded by the Center for Disease Control, for a regional intervention in the treatment of Type II diabetes found in the Hispanic population who live at or below the poverty level in this region. RIT’s nutrition researchers developed a nutrition intervention proposal for The Monroe Plan of Greater Rochester for at-risk clientele with Type II diabetes. Working with RIT Dietetic students, the team initiated the project, including development and administration of a needs assessment for the affected Hispanic population and development of nutritional intervention strategies for the Hispanic community in 2006.  As CEO of the Senior Health Alliance, Underhill secured New York State, Workforce Development, TANF grants from the NYS Department of Health and the New York State Department of Labor for Alliance members for approximately 4 million dollars.  She is an active member of Continuing Developmental Services, Rochester New York; Executive Committee, Board of Directors member affiliated with quality assurance, Seniorsfirst Board, Rochester New York, Executive committee, member of Valley Manor Board of Directors.  Underhill also belongs to the American Dietetic Association, Chicago, Illinois and the Genesee Dietetic Association, Rochester New York. 

Larry Villasmil, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology/Packaging Science Department. He joined RIT in 2006 and previously taught and was a research assistant at Texas A&M. He also worked in industry as a rotating machinery senior engineer at PDVSA in Venezuela. Villasmil's research interests focus on computational fluid dynamics, turbulence modeling; rotor dynamics and turbomachinery and components design; industrial power generation and refrigeration; heat transfer and fluid power. He is also interested in conventional and alternative energy technologies, engineering education as well as ethics in engineering. Carol B. Whitlock, Ph.D., is a professor in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Department in the School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation.  Since 2005, she has also served as the department’s undergraduate chair.  Whitlock has taught at RIT since 1972.   Previously, Whitlock was a professor and senior food faculty.  She taught graduate and undergraduate courses in food product development, food science, strategic environment of the food industry, food preparation, menu planning, sensory evaluation, nutrition, food processing and technology, food quality assurance, technologies in service systems, and global standards of food.  While at RIT, Whitlock has created 19 new courses and taught 14. 
She developed and taught (1999) the first online course to ACMT, the American College of Management and Technology, Croatia; class size 120 – 200 students.  She has also frequently served as chair of department curriculum revision:  developed new service management undergraduate core of courses, increased synergism and efficiencies between majors, facilitated granting of maximum credit to transfer students (1995); facilitated a major undergraduate curriculum revision (1988-89); developed competency-based curriculum (1985-86); developed graduate level Foods (1987) and Nutrition (1989) options curricula.  Whitlock also served as chair for the accreditation of the school (1990-93), and accreditation awarded to 2000.  She has also chaired or served on numerous Institute, college, and School committees, including:

Teresa Wolcott is a lecturer in the Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety Department. She joined RIT as an adjunct instructor in 2002 and became a full-time lecturer in 2010. Teresa is a member of the Board of Directors of Women in Technology at RIT, coordinates the civil engineering technology surveying program, and is a member of the faculty/student LEED team.

Research interests include: critical infrastructure as it relates to storm water management and aqueous treatment systems.

Scott Wolcott is a professor in the Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Management and Safety Department. He also serves at the Civil Engineering Technology Program Chair and has been teaching at RIT since 1997. Prior to joining RIT, Wolcott was a Senior Civil/Environmental Engineer working for engineering consulting firms in Buffalo, New York. Wolcott's foci are currently in the area of critical infrastructure as it relates to storm water management and aqueous treatment systems.  He is also heavily invested in the development of the environmental management profession.  Currently, his work involves the establishment of a standardized undergraduate program for environmental management for certification/licensure requirements. Wolcott is an active member of the ASEE, the New York State Technology Educators Association and the American Water Works Association. He served as president for the SUNY Buffalo chapter of Chi Epsilon and is a member of Tau Beta Pi.

Research interests include:  Differences in goal orientations, dispositional influences on goal orientations, and how goal orientations can be manipulated in the work setting.

Bogdan V. Yamkovenko, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Service Systems in the College of Applied Science’s School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation..  He joined RIT in 2012 and was previously an assessment and education research specialist with the Shaw Group in Washington D.C. and a management consultant with Accenture.  His areas of research interest focus on the differences in goal orientations, dispositional influences on goal orientations, and how goal orientations can be manipulated in the work setting.  Additionally, Yamkovenko is interested in the influences of goal orientation on transfer behaviors and learning and development, the differences in global goals people set and the discrepancies between these goals and work task/achievement goals, and the influences of affective states on trait and state goal orientation. 

He is a journal reviewer for Journal of European Industrial Training, also reviewing articles submitted for publication on various HRD and training related topics.  Yamkovenko is an active member of the Academy of Human Resource Development and has presented in international HRD conferences.  

Research Interests include: Curriculum development and instruction for 9-12 pre-engineering and university freshman engineering technology students.

George H. Zion is a professor in the Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Department and serves as Director of Project Lead the Way. Zion joined RIT in 1984 and prior to his current role, served as Program Chair for Computer Engineering Technology. His professional focus is curriculum development and instruction for 9-12 pre-engineering and university freshman engineering technology students. His teaching and scholarship focus is the pedagogy of teaching and learning with a primary interest in active-learning technique. Additionally, his technical interest is in the area of software development for embedded systems.

Zion is the lead curriculum author and assessment coordinator for Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Digital Electronics Curriculum and is a member of Tau Alpha Pi National Engineering Technology and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Societies.
