Strategic Alliances and Educational Partnerships

New York State Wine and Culinary Center

New York state wines, food and agriculture - along with RIT - share the center stage in a collaboration launched fall 2005 involving RIT's College of Applied Science and Technology, Constellation Brands, Wegmans, and the New York Wine and Grape Foundation.

The two-story, 19,000-square-foot facility is located on three acres that overlook Canandaigua Lake in Ontario County, N.Y. This facility provides a beautiful and well appointed setting to educate consumers about New York wines and foods, while also offering training for employees in the food, wine, hospitality, health, and nutrition industries. The center attracts an estimated 100,000 visitors each year and is a vital force in the state's economy, fostering job creation and retention in hospitality-related industries.

The New York Wine and Culinary Center is a direct connection for students involved in research, development and networking with New York's rapidly expanding wine and food industries,” said Francis Domoy, professor and chair of RIT's School of Hospitality and Service Management and a member of the center's board of directors. Programs at the center for the general public include cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs, lectures, concerts, tours, summer "culinary camp" for children and more.

The center includes classroom space, a 50-seat, theater-style demonstration kitchen, a hands-on training kitchen, a wine tasting room, an exhibit hall, a retail center, a private dining room, and an outdoor garden. Given the synergy and collaboration found at the center, the New York Wine and Grape Foundation has relocated its headquarters and administrative offices from Penn Yan, N.Y., to the center.

RIT's American College of Management and Technology in Dubrovnik, Croatia

The School of Hospitality and Service Management began its international hospitality program in 1997 when it opened the American College of Management and Technology in Dubrovnik, Croatia. RIT was chosen from among several prestigious American universities to be the academic model for revitalizing the Croatian hospitality sector. The college offers an associate degree and a bachelor of science degree in hospitality and service management, a master of science degree in service management, and several certificate programs to serve the local tourism industries.

ACMT students, faculty and staff played a major role in organizing the 23rd RIT Big Shot event in April 2007, which features the entrance to Dubrovnik's Old Town at Pile (pronounced "pee-lay") Gate. The remarkable picture—which was blessed with perfect weather—shows the centuries-old bridge, fortress wall, and turrets bathed in the light from hundreds of flashlights and camera flash units. The RIT Big Shot event began in 1987 as a way to teach students about electronic flash photography.
