College and Careers Pre-Conference Luncheon
This is the second summer, WIT and WIC hosted the College and Careers pre-conference Luncheon. Students interested in programs offered by either CASTs- Engineering Technology School or the Golisano College could register. The purpose of this ice-breaker event was to give the College and Career participants a chance to socialize and get to know one another before heading over to the field house for check-in. During this networking event many students met other women with similar interest as well as their weekend roommate.
Girls Technology Workshop
September: Solar Cars and renewable energy
In September WIT hosted middle school girls by highlighted renewable energy with demonstrations of RIT’s E-bike and making solar cars. The MS students also learned about the importance of clean water and how to make natural filters.
January and March: Wind Turbines
WIT hosted high school women in January and March. A half-day experience at RIT’s state-of-the art laboratories with direction from RIT women engineering technology students was offered. Throughout the morning students toured labs and saw demonstrations in the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology and/or Packaging Science labs. The different engineering disciplines, along with renewable energy were discussed while building a wind turbine. As each new engineering discipline is presented, another piece of the project was constructed. This program is designed to:
· show that science can be both fun and creative
· connect science and engineering to things in everyday life that they already know and care about
· demonstrate that women can make a positive impact on the world with a career in engineering
