Imaging and Photographic Technology

Suggested Supply List 2007

IPT Photo 1 – CAMERA

The Imaging and Photographic Technology Photo 1 class will rely heavily on both 4x5 large format and digital imaging.  These cameras are available for checkout from our equipment cage at no additional cost to the student.  35mm film SLR cameras will not be used for class assignments.  Digital SLR cameras will be heavily utilized.

While not required, we cannot over-emphasize that if possible students bring their own digital SLR cameras fitted with a basic lens.  Digital cameras used for class assignments must exhibit complete manual control over f/stops, shutter speeds, and focus.  They must be 5 megapixels or more for the class and be able to be remotely fired with either a cable release or electronically.  The camera must be able to shoot in RAW file format and be able to be custom white balanced.  The most popular brands seem to be either Canon or Nikon.  Not all Canon or Nikon cameras have the above capabilities. Other brands are also applicable.

Laptop Computers

A student having a laptop computer will find it most useful.  Most of our assignments involve digital photography which is greatly enhanced by the student being able to view their work as they shoot in the studio and field. The students who have laptops this year found them to be extremely useful.  Laptops can be borrowed from the school, but they are very limited and are on a 24 hour check out basis only. While there is a preponderance of Apples especially in the art areas of the school many Tech students have PCs and find them equally applicable. All Imaging and Photographic Technology department computer areas are equipped with PCs. All fine art computer labs have Apples.

If you will be bringing a laptop bring what you are most comfortable with. Photoshop is widely used and students can obtain a discount on this and other Adobe products at our bookstore.
