oneil SEASON'S GREETINGS
from Dean Emeritus Lothar Engelmann

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year! The weather forecast for the next weeks says just ÒWinterÓ for Germany. How far that includes the normally milder Cologne area remains to be experienced. Anyway, we are ready for the holiday visits of our friends and relatives. Daughter Bettina will arrive on the 22nd from Cincinnati. As the photo (taken from our terrace) indicates, the Rhein river still flows in all its beauty and majesty next to our house, which always gives us confidence that the world is basically still sound. We still very much enjoy our life, although in terms of health it offers its challenges. Fortunately our physicians ( mostly in the Hospital only 8 minutes by foot from us) treat us exceptionally well, and thanks to the - costly Ð blessings of the pharmaceutical industry, we have a reasonably good grip on our well being. Naturally, especially during this holiday season, we not only miss son Randy and family, but also our many friends in the USA. We never discount the possibility of seeing each other during the course of the year. Greetings and best wishes, Lothar and Waltraud

omedia cafe Media Café Courses: Moving Media 1
Yes You Can Take a 6pm Class

Students taking this tools course will work with still photographs, electronic images, video footage, and camera recorded sound to create new work that merges the disciplines of photography and video. Students will use media software to produce work that weaves still imagery and time based work into moving media canvases. The emphasis is experimental. We will view contemporary work from the 400 pieces in the Café collection.

Students will work Sony digital cameras and with Final Cut software, learning how to apply basic editing techniques, filters, color correction, titles, and basic sound manipulation.

Students will explore traditional narratives, nontraditional narratives, conceptual constructions, and performance. They will work with traditional photography processes, electronic media, and projection equipment to create and display their projects. Each student will produce a final project for public presentation in the Media Café during the final week of class.
Moving Media 1 is the foundation course in a yearlong offering of the revised Media Café Curriculum. It is open to all third and fourth year students with experience in digital imaging. PJ and AD students are welcome and invited to work on projects that pertain to their concentration.

25th BIG SHOT in Washington, DC

at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian

Hundreds Shine their Lights in Washington, D.C. for RITÕs 25th Big Shot Photograph Nighttime image features SmithsonianÕs National Museum of the American Indian

Families, friends and strangers united on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., tonight to make Rochester Institute of TechnologyÕs 25th Big Shot photograph. RITÕs Big Shot project began in 1987 and draws hundreds of willing volunteers no matter what city or country it occurs.

The SmithsonianÕs National Museum of the American Indian, which opened its flagship museum five years ago this month, is the subject of the nighttime image. The Washington Monument is in the background. Perched on 15-foot high scaffolding, RIT photographers captured the landscape of our nationÕs capital.

Despite rainy conditions, tonightÕs event drew more than 800 volunteers. Families from the Washington, D.C., area joined museum members and RIT students, faculty and alumni. The making of the Big Shot photograph requires the volunteers, using only flashlights and camera flash units to provide the primary light source. It is often described as a Òpainting with lightÓ photograph, because while RIT photographers shoot an extended exposure of 20 seconds, volunteers continuously paint the subject area. The limestone exterior of the museum was quarried from Kasota, Minn., and is a warm buff color that has several textures to suggest the building grew out of the surrounding landscape.

Volunteers broke into lighting teams with each team assigned a specific area of the landmark to illuminate. For tonightÕs image, 11 lighting teams were needed. In addition, eight volunteers from RIT and the museum served as models, taking position in the foreground to offer the photo a sense of scale.

Among tonightÕs rookie volunteers were RIT President Bill Destler and his wife Rebecca Johnson.

ÒWe were excited to be a part of this rich RIT tradition and see so many members of the RIT campus take part including our RIT alumni who traveled here from all over the country,Ó says RIT President Bill Destler. ÒWe are proud to be sharing our 25th Big Shot with this national landmark that is a cultural embassy to Native Americans everywhere.Ó

The RIT Big Shot event is part of the museumÕs fall celebrations for its fifth anniversary.

ÒIn spite of the rain, families, friends of the museum and RIT alumni showed up with flashlights in hand,Ó says Kevin Gover (Pawnee/Comanche), director of the SmithsonianÕs National Museum of the American Indian. We are so proud to be part of RITÕs Big Shot.Ó

Faculty members Michael Peres and Bill DuBois from RITÕs School of Photographic Arts and Sciences and Dawn Tower DuBois from RITÕs National Technical Institute for the Deaf are the main organizers.

RITÕs Big Shot photography project began in 1987 and has drawn thousands of volunteers and spectators. Past Big Shot photos have captured national and international landmarks including the U.S.S. Intrepid, the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden, and George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. To view all past 25 Big Shot photographs, visit www.rit.edu/bigshot .

NPPA Presents Annual Top Honors & Recognition Awards

DURHAM, NC (June 9, 2009) - The National Press Photographers Association will present the organization's top honors and awards for the year during the Sprague Awards Dinner on Saturday at the conclusion of Convergence '09 at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, NV, and winners this year include industry leaders, who are changing the face of photojournalism in the new era of multimedia, as well as educators who are preparing college students for journalism's rapidly-changing future.

Professor Gunther Cartwright of the Rochester Institute of Technology is the winner of the Clifton C. Edom Award. The award recognizes an individual in the tradition of Cliff Edom to inspire and motivate members of the photojournalism community to reach new heights. Edom taught at the University of Missouri for 29 years, founded the Missouri Photo Workshop six decades ago, and is credited with coining the term "photo-journalism." Gunther is being recognized for his continued support of photojournalism and its future and, as a nominee wrote, for being "beloved by his students who view him as a tough, but positive, influence on their growth as visual journalists."

Robert McNeely

a special guest at Eastman Kodak this week

Tuesday, March 10th, 3-4 PM
at RIT's building 07A, room 1400

Robert McNeely is an American photojournalist and Vietnam veteran. He chronicled President Clintons march to the White House. For the next six years, each morning he would shoot in black and white (other members of the White House photo staff shot in color), in order to make a historic record of virtually every meeting, every detail of the presidents daily life.

In 1998, McNeely left his job at the White House to set up a project to document the 2000 political race. From Republicans to Democrats to Reform Party candidates, Bob has spent most of the past year on the road covering them all. His exhibit, The Clinton Years documents McNeely?s photographs of President Clinton. The book on this project has been released by Callaway. Women at Risk in India

a presentation by Don Cochran, SPAS adjunct faculty

Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at 7:30 PM
Carlson Auditorium, Bldg. 76 - 1125

A short documentary presentation about a faith based training program in rural Southern India. It is a success story about a Sewing Micro-Enterprise course in Chillakallu that provides widows, the most vulnerable members of society in the developing world, with valuable vocational training in tailoring and home based business skills. Upon graduation, each student receives a sewing machine and may become a self-employed seamstress. As a result of this course, the sense of self dignity and role in community these women once held is restored.
