Unlikely Partners: Engineering and Poetry

“How Did Electrification Affect Modern Poetry?”

Beginning with an introduction to electricity generation (showing how and when electrification took place in the United States), Professors Bailey and Coon explore the social and technological changes brought by electrification, as well the accompanying benefits and fears.

Turning to poetry, the impact is dramatic. Electricity influences the poet’s use of metaphor, as well as subject matter.

In the 21st century, Craig Czury’s poems focus on the impact coal mining has had on cities, landscapes, and miners’ families and health. His book is God’s Shiny Glass Eye (FootHills Publishing, 2005).
