The Department of Communication, housed within RIT's College of Liberal Arts, is home to four degree programs: a B.S. degree in Professional & Technical Communication (PTC) since 1986, a B.S. degree in Advertising & Public Relations (APR) since Fall 2005, a B.S. in Journalism beginning Fall 2009, and an M.S. degree in Communication & Media Technologies (CMT) since 2001. There are 18 full-time faculty, a number of adjunct faculty, two Staff Assistants, and several student workers in the Department.

The Department also serves RIT students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts Communication Minor, the College's Communication Concentration, and all RIT students who select junior and senior level communication Liberal Arts electives. The Department advises Liberal Smarts, the twice annual newsletter prepared by students enrolled in Liberal Arts degree programs. We organize the Institute's Public Speaking Contest, an event held twice a year. In 2004 we initiated an annual Undergraduate Research Conference in Communication.

Selected Department activities, events and students are supported by the William A. Kern Endowment for research in communication.
