All School of Communication students complete one semester (a minimum of 350 hours) of cooperative education (co-op). The co-op experience is a non-credit bearing, full-time, paid employment position directly related to your field of study. The experience provides you with the opportunity to practice and further develop skills in your chosen profession. As one of the oldest and largest in the country, RIT's co-op program is known and respected by employers throughout the nation.
Before beginning your co-op search, visit the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services, where personal job-search counseling and guidance are available. The office is located on campus in the Bausch & Lomb Center. You are free to draw on personal resources such as friends or family when seeking a co-op position; however, Handshake, with its catalogues of current openings, is extremely helpful.
Co-ops MUST be pre-approved by Dr. Ammina Kothari or Professor Elizabeth Reeves O’Connor.
Instructions for completing your co-op requirements
After completing 60 credit hours, you are eligible for a co-op. Begin your co-op experience by utilizing the many resources offered by the School of Communication and Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services for assistance in areas such as personal branding, social media presence, Handshake navigation, networking, resume writing, and interviewing strategies. Work with your faculty advisor to identify appropriate opportunities and draw on RIT connections and personal resources such as friends or family when seeking a co-op position. Once you have identified a co-op opportunity, you must be pre-approved by the School of Communication before you begin the employment.
Follow these steps to have your co-op approved and registered:
1. Complete and sign the School of Communication Co-op Approval form and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org for approval and signature by Dr. Ammina Kothari or Professor Elizabeth Reeves O’Connor. Once approved, you will be notified by email and enrolled in the registration system (SIS).
2. Register your approved co-op with the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services.
a. Go to http://www.rit.edu/emcs/oce/.
b. Select "Student."
c. Select “Your Co-op/Internship” in the “Report to Us! Please” section.
d. Sign in using your RIT username and password.
e. Complete the “Co-op Notification Form" and select “Submit.”
When you complete your co-op, you will be directed to provide a summary of your work experience. Your employer must also complete an evaluation of your job performance. Once your work summary and employer evaluation are complete, the School of Communication director will review the report and submit your grade.
