Frequently Asked Questions

I'd like to enroll as a full-time CMT student. What is the best quarter to begin?
While you can begin your CMT course work any quarter, most full-time CMT students start in the Fall quarter. By beginning in the Fall quarter, you'll be certain that you can fulfill pre-requisite requirements for communication electives.
I work all day so I'm interested in enrolling as a part-time CMT student. What's available for people in situations such as mine?
Many CMT students are attending on a part-time basis. We recognize and are sensitive to that fact. So, most CMT courses are scheduled for late afternoon or early evening. Typically, there's at least one CMT course offered every quarter that will meet your scheduling needs. Moreover, some CMT courses are available via distance education.
What is the writing portfolio required for admission?
The CMT program is writing intensive and the portfolio provides the review committee with an opportunity to assess a candidate's writing competency. The portfolio is a sample of your writing. You can submit term papers, press releases, advertising copy, creative works, reports, and anything that demonstrates your writing style beyond your statement of education objectives.
How big are the CMT classes?
Relatively small. Our graduate courses purposefully have restricted enrollment ceilings thereby enhancing your opportunity to interact with the professor and the other students.Who's teaching the CMT courses?
Virtually all CMT classes are taught by full-time Department of Communication faculty who hold the Ph.D. degree and are experienced and widely published communication scholars.
Is there financial assistance available for CMT students?
Yes. RIT's Financial Aid Office can help you. And, if you'll write us, we'll be happy to tell you about graduate assistantships and Kern Professor Research Assistantships. Use the Contact Information button on the left side of the screen to write us.
For answers to other questions, please contact us to write, call, fax or email the Department of Communication.
