The Department of Communication's graduate degree in Communication & Media Technologies (CMT) was initiated in September, 2001. At present, there are nearly 50 CMT alumni and more than 40 students enrolled, including those on a part-time basis. CMT students come from all over the world including Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Croatia, India, Russia, Ukraine, Taiwan, and Turkey. Unlike most of RIT’s programs, a majority of CMT students are women.

A number of students come into the program right after completing their undergraduate degrees. Most, however, come to the program after working in a career seeking to update and sharpen their skills. Some come to the program to change careers and acquire news skills. Most enter without undergraduate degrees in Communication. Their majors have included Business Administration, English, Engineering, Information Technology, Journalism, Literature, Psychology, and Spanish.

Graduates hold positions as account executives, marketing directors, technical editors, and public relations directors. CMT graduates are also prepared to continue their graduate work toward a doctoral degree.

CMT students present their research at professional conferences and sometimes assist in teaching undergraduate courses. They have presented their research and have won awards for their research at the conferences of the New York State Communication Association, the Eastern Communication Association and the International Association of Science.
