Communication and the technologies for message creation and dissemination are at the center of dramatic economic, social and cultural changes occurring as a result of technological development and global connectedness. The Master of Science in Communication & Media Technologies (CMT) is an interdisciplinary program that combines Liberal Arts courses in communication with classes in an applied or professional area such as marketing, health systems administration, information technology, and digital publishing.

CMT graduates are adept at the analysis of communication problems, the development of solutions, and the creation of messages as a result of their combined training in the social sciences, humanities, and applied technologies. Required communication courses provide you the opportunity to gain broad historical understanding of essential ethical, legal, and social issues. Elective courses allow you to hone your skills in written and visual message content across a variety of media. Applied and professional courses offer you opportunities to implement and apply those skills. The thesis or thesis project option combines the knowledge you've gained with the skills you've developed to enable you to produce an original contribution to the knowledge base in communication. CMT students also have the option to take a comprehensive examination at the end of their course work in place of a thesis or thesis project.

As a CMT graduate, you're prepared for a career as a communication expert in such venues as commerce and industry, education and entertainment, and government and not-for-profits. CMT graduates hold positions as account executives, marketing directors, technical editors, and public relations directors. A significant number of CMT graduates have chosen to continue their studies by pursuing a doctoral degree.

Most students enter CMT in the fall semester. This makes it easier to complete the prerequisites for communication electives. CMT courses are scheduled for early evening to allow part-time study for those who are working full-time. In addition to traditional face-to-face classes and seminars, online as well as blended (both face-to-face and mediated) courses are offered to make scheduling more convenient. These blended and online courses take advantage of the technological advances of new media; the School uses media to teach media.

CMT classes are relatively small with a ceiling of 20 students in Communication courses. This allows for better interaction and instruction. Virtually all CMT classes are taught by full-time, experienced, and widely-published School of Communication professors who hold the Ph.D. degree in Communication. You will come to know your professors on a first-name basis and they will treat you as an intellectual equal.
