April 14, 2005

Sponsored by
Rochester Institute of Technology Department of Criminal Justice
and
Finger Lakes Restorative Justice Center

This one day conference will focus on the implementation of Restorative Justice practices on college campuses. Thom Allena, M.S & David Karp, Ph.D., editors of a new book “Restorative Justice on the College Campus will join us to share their research, experience and insights into developing campus based Restorative Justice programs.

David Karp is Associate Professor of Sociology at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He conducts research on community-based responses to crime, has given workshops on restorative justice and community justice nationally, and is a founding member of the New York State Community Justice Forum. One of David’s current projects involves restorative practices in college judicial systems and K-12 settings.

Thom Allena is an instructor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at the University of New Mexico-Taos. He has worked with restorative justice ideas since 1984 through his consulting practice, Innovations in Justice. Thom has consulted with several universities in the application of restorative justice to campus related issues, including, UCLA, University of Colorado, University of California – Santa Barbara and Association for Student Judicial Affairs.

Also featured will be information from Student Affairs professionals at RIT regarding the creation and implementation of their new Restorative Conferencing process.

Conference participants will have the unique opportunity to better understand restorative justice philosophy. Hopefully, participants will leave the event with clear ideas for the development of restorative justice on their campuses.
