Department of Economics Resources

Special Opportunities for Economics Students

Economics students may apply for a research assistantship as early as their second semester. Research assistants work with an Economics professor to assist with the professor's research project. They are paid positions that span approximately 50 hours during the academic year. (And they look great on a résumé or graduate school application!)

Economics students are eligible to apply for a teaching assistantship. Teaching assistants work with a professor in the department and tutor students in Principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics courses. Teaching assistantships are paid positions that span an average of 4 hours per week per semester.

Studying economics at RIT means you have the opportunity to conduct your own research, receive academic credit, and obtain funds to carry out the project. You can select your own topic or pick one suggested by one of your professors, subject to departmental approval, and submit a proposed budget. You will then work with an individual professor who will oversee the project and assign the grade.

Student Organizations

The Economics Club is a student-managed organization that provides a forum for student fellowship in general and discussions of timely economic topics in particular. The Economics Club meets weekly on campus in the early evening. For further information regarding the Club, including its meeting schedule, please contact Economics Department Senior Staff Assistant, Ms. Cathy Claus, at cabgsm@rit.edu.

Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Honors Society in economics, is the world's largest economics undergraduate honorary society. Students who have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better and have completed at least four Economics courses with a GPA of 3.0 or better are eligible for membership. Membership in the society includes a subscription to The American Economist, the economics journal of ODE, and provides an outlet for the publication of refereed undergraduate research. For more information, please visit the ODE national office website and/or contact RIT's ODE faculty advisor, Professor Brìd Gleeson Hanna.
