The Department of English offers both traditional and contemporary approaches to the study of literary and non-literary texts, including but not limited to imaginative fiction, non-fiction, poetry, visual culture and new media. The Literary and Cultural Studies concnetration allows students to pursue a course of study that has been specifically tailored to individual student interests and needs. Students who select this concentration will work closely with a faculty advisor to design a three course sequence based on interest in particular authors, themes, histories, genres, geographies, media and/or interpretive and analytical methodologies. The advanced practices of critical analysis, synthesis and contextualization characteristic of our courses challenge students to develop coherent frameworks for interpretation and evaluation. For instance, a student interested in configuring a Literary and Cultural Studies minor in such areas as myth and visual arts, international studies or multicultural America could work closely with an advisor to shape his/her program. All of our courses are offer opportunities for sustained writing and communication practice.
