LITR - Literary and Cultural Studies

Minor Advisor: Elena Sommers  ersgla@rit.edu Building 6 Room 1317  Telephone 475-4417

The Department of English offers both traditional and contemporary approaches to the study of literary and non-literary texts, including but not limited to imaginative fiction, non-fiction, poetry, visual culture and new media. The Literary and Cultural Studies minor allows students to pursue a course of study that has been specifically tailored to individual student interests and needs. Those who select this minor will work closely with a faculty advisor to design a five course sequence based on their interests in particular authors, themes, histories, genres, geographies, media and/or interpretive and analytical methodologies. The advanced practices of critical analysis, synthesis and contextualization characteristic of our courses challenge students to develop coherent frameworks for interpretation and evaluation. For instance, a student interested in configuring a Literary and Cultural Studies minor in such areas as myth and visual arts, international studies or multicultural America could work closely with an advisor to shape his/her program.

All of our courses are writing intensive and offer opportunities for sustained writing and communication practice.

GSWR - Science Writing

Minor Advisor: Lisa Hermsen lmhgsl@rit.edu, 475-4553, Building 6 - 1317

The Science Writing Minor gives students a basic grounding in the practice and theory of writing about science for a popular audience. In the three required courses, students gain practice in writing about science for lay readers as well as for scientists interested in the wider social ramifications of science, and they examine the rhetorical elements of a wide range of science writings. They can then choose from a group of courses that deal with the history, ethics, cultural debates, and literary representation of science and technology. The Minor serves as a professionally marketable complement to a number of degree programs in the College of Science, the College of Engineering, CAST, as well as Professional and Technical Communication, and other programs across the Institute.
