Interests

After more than 30 years as a writer, journalist and educator, I  often teach Creative Writing, African-American Literature, Literature and Religion and a wide range of other Literary and Cultural Studies courses. The classroom is a complement to my career as a writer.

In 2007, I edited When Pluto Was A Planet: The Golphin Chronicles, a collection of short stories by RIT students, and Tales of a Summer, a brief volume of nonfiction by Rochester area high school students.  My other publications include Life and Other Things I Know: Poems, Essays and Short Stories (1999), African African American Children\'s Stories: A Treasury of Tradition and Pride (2001), Grandma Loves You: My First Treasury (2003), African American Stories: My First Treasury (2003), Like A Dry Land: A Soul\'s Journey through the Middle East (2006) and contributions to Take Two, They\'re Small (2000), an anthology of poems, memoir, essay and fiction on food.

I am managing editor of about...time Magazine, a national publication based in Rochester. From 1987 to 1995, I wrote a national column syndicated on the Newhouse and New York Times wires. Also, throughout the past three decades, I have contributed articles and creative works to a broad range of publishing outlets that include Christianity Today, National Catholic Reporter, Emerge, Biblical History, United Methodist News Service, Baptist News Service, Religious News Service, Our Sunday Visitor The New York Times, The Washington Post, Washington Living, Upstate New Yorker, Reporter Magazine, Drylongso, Fyah, MentalSatin, Pinnacle Hill Review, Bridges, Ishmael Reed\'s Konch Magazine, UpandComing Magazine, and the New York Times American News Service.
