I.C.1 Academic Standards College of Liberal Arts

1. The College will adopt a standard English handbook for use in Liberal Arts course writing assignments. As a result:

  1. In assigning writing, instructors will be able to refer students to the handbook as a guide for organizing and developing ideas; or using standard grammar and mechanics; for adopting approptiate form and style.
  2. In responding to writing, instructors will be able to refer students to the handbook foi explanations and exercises on specific writing problems.

2. The College will expect that students in Liberal Arts courses have and use a standard collegiate dictionary. As a result:

  1. Students will have available an immediate, accurate means for defining unfamiliar terms from their textbooks, lectures, and discussions.
  2. Students will develop language skills beyond those gained almost exclusively through oral means.

3. The College will regularly offer/organize workshops on creating, directing, and responding to student writing assignments. As a result:

  1. Faculty will increase the student effectiveness of their writing assignments
  2. Faculty will direct student writing more effectively
  3. Faculty will respond to student writing more efficiently

4. The College will with faculty participation and approval update, revise, and implement the College of Liberal Arts Writing Policy.
