II.A.3 Annual Tenure Review of Tenure-Track Faculty

RIT Tenure Policy, E5.0, Section 4b, requires an annual review of tenure-track faculty. The following procedures comply with this requirement:

  1. Period of Performance -- The period of performance to be reviewed runs from the Summer Quarter of the previous academic year through the Spring Quarter of the current academic year.
  2. Documentation
    1. The self-evaluation and supporting documentation prepared for the annual merit review (referred to in the RIT Policies and Procedures E.7 as the 'Annual Review') shall be the foundation of the annual tenure review.
    2. The annual tenure review must also include faculty evaluation, and departments shall annually conduct a summative peer review that will include syllabi, readings, tests, and such other material as is reasonably related to the candidate's performance.
  3. Process
    1. As part of the annual merit review, the department chair will meet with the candidate to review his or her performance, and information from that meeting may be included in the department tenure review.
    2. The chair is to communicate to the dean the department recommendation and, in consultation with the dean, shall write an annual tenure review statement assessing the candidate's progress toward tenure.
    3. The candidate, department chair, and the dean (or associate deans) will meet in the candidate’s second and fourth year toward tenure to discuss the annual tenure review statement. This meeting will take place before the end of Summer Quarter. Candidates may request additional meetings with the dean or associate deans as necessary.
