COLA Connections Newsletter
From the Desk of the Dean
This has been a very successful year for the College of Liberal Arts. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all students, faculty and staff who helped to make it a success. I am looking forward to an exciting new year this fall as we get one year closer to the semester calendar and engage in continued ascension of the college at RIT, nationally, and internationally.
The year wrapped up with a number of multidisciplinary events that highlight the collaborative spirit of the College. The William A. Kern Conference in Visual Communication, hosted by Jonathan Schroeder, William A. Kern Professor in Communications, was held between May 3rd and 5th, and examined the question: When do images cause trouble? The Caroline Werner Gannett project wrapped up its 2011-2012 installation with MacArthur award-winning artist and sculptor, Elizabeth Turk. The Conable Lecture Series also continued with speaker Joyce McDonough, Associate Professor and Chair of Linguistics & Brain and Cognitive Sciences at University of Rochester.
This edition of the newsletter includes an article on Katie Harris, a fourth year advertising and public relations major who serves as the peer mentor for the Department of Communication. Additional articles include a feature on alumni Chris Spinelli ('08, '09) and Jon Mervine ('07), who have opened the Roc Brewing Co. in downtown Rochester, as well as an article on the Kern Lecture Series, and a feature on Frans Wildenhain 1950-75: Creative and Commercial American Ceramics at Mid-Century, an exhibition being put together by Department of Communication faculty member Bruce Austin.
Once again, I would like to thank all members of the College of Liberal Arts for an exciting and successful year. To all of our graduating seniors, I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. To all returning students, faculty and staff- have a safe and happy summer break!
