COLA Connections Newsletter: Fall 2017

From the Desk of the Dean

And just like that, it’s Fall Semester again!

We’ve had a busy summer and start to the new academic year, and I’m thrilled with the things that are happening at RIT and in the College of Liberal Arts. Our university moved up ten spots to #97 in the National University ranking in U.S. News & World Report; our School of Communication debuted a Professional Certificate with edX aimed at helping professionals build relationships, improve productivity, and boost collaboration in the workplace; and our faculty and students have been busy with research, academic travel, and innovative new coursework. All-in-all, a productive summer and semester so far!

In this edition of COLA Connections, we’ll shine a spotlight on Criminal Justice major Keith Ericksen and his passion for making a positive impact on criminal justice reform. We will also connect with Communication & Media Technologies alumnus Rashad Bayramov, who authored the first-ever book on public speaking published in his home country of Azerbaijan.

Summer just isn’t summer without our students going on study abroad trips. We’ll connect with third-year Political Science major, Alessandra Santarosa, to hear about her summer experience at RIT Kosovo. And finally, we’ll hear from our new Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. Andy Herbert, who is likely to be a familiar face to many in our RIT community.

Lastly, we dedicate this issue to our dear friend, Melinda Beyerlein, Senior Staff Assistant for the School of Communication, who unexpectedly passed away on September 9th.  Melinda was loved by all.  She was a tremendous individual and a valued member of our college community, and she will be greatly missed.
