CLA Connections
COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS

FEBRUARY 2011

From the Desk of Dean Winebrake

As the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts, I would like to express how honored I am to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated group of faculty, staff, and students. The College is clearly on an upward trajectory. Our student enrollment is growing; our faculty scholarship is cutting edge; and our involvement in the local and global community is expanding. It is a great time to be part of the College of Liberal Arts!

This newsletter, CLA Connections, gives us a chance to showcase a number of faculty- and student-led activities occurring within the College that raise our national prominence as an academic institution. For example, in January Dr. Ron Hira, associate professor of public policy, was recently featured on a special edition of the public affairs program Dan Rather Reports, focused on outsourcing; Dr. Rich Newman, professor of history, was interviewed on campus by CSPAN for an episode of American History TV; and, psychology student Danielle Burnash and Dr. Lindsay Schenkel, assistant professor of psychology, received national attention for a recent study they conducted on the incidence of abuse and neglect among deaf college students.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter! As always, please and contact my office if you have any questions or comments about the stories you read.

It is one of the first to comprehensively examine the processing and production of specific linguistic structures called "head-final structures" in different languages. (more)

Dr. Lindsay Schenkel   Study: Abuse Rates Higher Among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children with Hearing Youth
A new study at RIT, directed by assistant professor of psychology Dr. Lindsay Schenkel, indicates that the incidence of maltreatment, including neglect and physical and sexual abuse, is more than 25 percent higher among deaf and hard-of-hearing children than among hearing youths. The research also shows a direct correlation between childhood maltreatment and higher rates of negative cognition, depression and post-traumatic stress in adulthood. The study, which was presented at the 2010 annual meeting of the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, is one of the first to compare childhood maltreatment between deaf and hearing children.
