CLASS OF ’08 SPRING UPDATES!
RIT School Psychology students are required to fulfill three practica experiences over two years. The Class of ’08 is currently at their third practicum site (school). Practica experiences allow for students to get hands-on experience with the roles, responsibilities, and functions of school personnel and the operation of interdisciplinary teams through both observation and participation. Throughout these practica experiences, students also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with school and community resources available. The practica requires students to be at their designated school for six hours a week, and are supervised by a certified and experienced school psychologist.
Along with practicum experiences, the second-year students are also confirming their internship placements for the upcoming academic year. The 1200 hour internship is the culminating experience in the school psychology program. It provides an intensive, supervised training experience in which interns put the knowledge, skills and attitudes learned during their training program into practice while continuing to develop and expand upon those abilities. The internship year is a broad-based, individualized experience that provides an opportunity to work with a variety of children, parents, teachers, support staff and administrators. Interns are exposed to a variety of educational meetings, programs, workshops, resources, and conferences through their internship sites. Monthly class seminars supplement the supervised training experience.

My current practicum placement is at the Honeoye Central School District where I am working with Heather Paler. This site has allowed me to be very independent and gain some more opportunities with testing and both individual and group counseling. I am not sure where my internship will be next year, but I am very much looking forward to learning new things and using my skills.
Jennifer Leone:
I am currently in a BOCES setting at the Lois E. Bird School for my final practicum. I spend most of my time in individual and group counseling activities. Next year I will be interning in the Wayland-Cohocton School District in the southern-tier. I will be working with students across the age range (preK-12), so it should interesting and diverse, and I'm looking forward to the experience!
Cathy Lesio:
My current practicum site is at Wayne Finger Lakes BOCES in the Midlakes Education Center. I work with Ron Newman and his students - many of whom have autism or multiple disabilities. Next year, I'll be doing my internship in the East Irondequoit Central School District! I look forward to working with students of all different age and grade levels there.

Becca Mowell:
At my last practicum site, I had the opportunity to obtain sufficient hours to cover Spring quarter. So, I am currently focusing on my coursework and thesis. Next year, I will be fulfilling an internship within the Rochester City School District. I am very excited and cannot wait to start working there!
Laura Nemcek:
My current practicum placement is at the Brooks Hill School, which is one of several K-5 elementary schools within the suburban Fairport Central School District. For next year, my internship site will be in the Hilton Central School District along with one of my fellow RIT student colleagues. The site is in a somewhat rural location, but I believe the demographics are similar to those within a suburban district. From what I understand, the position involves a wide variety of activities in multiple school buildings, and allows the intern to work with children and adolescents from preschool through grade 12.
Alex Popa:
My current practicum site is in Fairport at Johanna Perrin Middle School. Next year I will be doing my internship in the Palmyra-Macedon school district.
Sandra Schwartz:
Currently I am at Minerva Deland, the all 9th grade school in Fairport School District. I love it there. I am doing my journal writing research and Dave Thomas has been a wonderful asset for me to have through that. Next year I will be at Red Jacket Educational Center, which is a part of WFL BOCES. I will be working with Lisa Brockhuizen. I can't wait to begin!
Annmarie Schimmel:
I am also currently at Wayne-Fingerlakes BOCES working with mostly a non-verbal Autistic population. It has proved to be a wonderful and interesting practicum site. I am looking forward to start my internship next year at Hilton Central School District. It is a Pre-school through 12 placement which also has Gifted and Autism programs.
