The 2nd
year school psychology students are currently placed at their second
practicum sites, where they continue to receive direct supervision in
the field. Below are reflections on their present experiences.
Lisa Barzotto:
My practicum placement
is in the Rochester City School District at Nathaniel Rochester
Community School #3. School #3 is a Kindergarten to 9th grade
placement. I feel so lucky to have been placed there, as I have
gained so many valuable experiences in several areas such as group
and individual counseling, cognitive andachievement testing,
alternative assessment, and intervention planning.
Annie Coseo:
My practicum placement
right now is Oakfield-Alabama School District. It is a Kindergarten
through 12th grade placement and it has been a wonderful experience
so far! Last year, I started out in Webster at Klem Road South
Elementary, which was a great place to begin my practicum experience.
From there, I went to Wilson-Magnet in the city, which was also very
interesting and informative! I am excited to be in Oakfield now and
be able to apply what I learned last year and what I will continue to
learn this year!
Ashleigh Crumb:
My current placement is
at Klem Road South in Webster. It is a K-5 suburban placement.
Although very different from my last placement in a middle school in
Hilton, I am enjoying my time at Klem South. I engage in a variety of
activities including testing and counseling. My thesis is on coping
mechanisms of students with learning disabilities at RIT.
Lynette Di Benedetto
My previous practicum
experience was at West Ridge Elementary in Greece with Cheddy Harvey
(who is currently an adjunct professor) and I learned a lot! I
performed a variety of activities including achievement testing,
observations ofrelated service providers, push-in social skills
groups, and classroom observations. This September I started at a new
site, Caledonia-Mumford Central Schools, where I get the opportunity
to work with children in grades K-12. I am continuing to do all the
things I had done at my old site, with newly added responsibilities.
I am a lot more independent in my work andI'll be conducting
reevaluations and counseling on my own.
Becky Haderer:
My name is Becky
Haderer and my current practicum site is at Holley Elementary. I am
excited to be in my second year of grad school because I am able to
transition from an observing role to a more active role in the
school. It's been such a rewarding experience thus far and I
reallyfeel as though I am a member of this school's community. This
Fall at Holley I am running a skills group with a 3rd/4th grade
class. The focusso farhas been on expressing feelings and the kids
seem to really enjoy the activities!I am also helping my supervisor
with her re-evaluations and am excited to be able to practice my
testing skills while being able to follow a case from start to
finish.
Jennifer McCracken:
I am finishing up my
second practicum placement in West Irondequoit. I work with my
supervisor in three different schools (K-3, K-3, 4-6). She does a lot
of work with behavior management and ABA, so I get to see a lot of
that. I have also done individual and group counseling. I have also
done what little testing she has and have gotten to interact with
many of the related services. Iam learning a lot inthe schools and
enjoyabsorbing as much as I can in relation toschoolpsychology.
Rebecca Mowell:
I'm doing my internship
with the Rochester City School District. I am currently splitting my
time between two sites - Central Assessment Team and Charlotte High
School. I love it! Both of the teams that I work closely with are
wonderful. The Central Assessment Team mainly focuses on referrals
and evaluations for students with temporary placements or for
students who attend parochial/residential/day-treatment schools
within the district. At Charlotte HS, I work with a diverse student
population from 7th to 12th grade. Most of my time is devoted to
cognitive and academic assessments. I also assist in classroom
observations and home visits. I'll also be picking up some counseling
cases, as well as completing behavioral intervention plans. I'm
looking forward to a busy, but fun year!
Stephanie Reusch:
I am continuing
my practicum placement at Avon High School. I had many opportunities
in the spring and couldn't wait to start back up again in the fall.
So far I have been co-facilitating a Girls' Group with my
supervisor, doing systematic observations in classrooms, record
reviews, and will shortly begin testing. In addition, I have recently
had the opportunity to spend time in the Avon Primary School where I
am using curriculum-based measurement (CBM) to assess students'
reading skills. The Avon School District is currently working to
incorporate RTI into their schools, so being able to watch this
process unfold has also been a wonderful learning experience.
Alison Senter:
I am currently at
Canandaigua Primary School, kindergarten through 2nd grade.
Canandaigua is a suburban setting. I frequently assist with
psychoeducational evaluations and attend a variety of meetings, at
which I have the opportunity to present testing results. I am
completing my thesis under the supervision of Dr. Lukomski. I will be
carrying out a study with9th gradestudents that examinethe
relationship between positive journal writing and happiness.
Kelly Smith:
I'm currently
at School #23 in the Rochester City School District. My second
quarter there has been great so far. I've hada nice balance of
testing and counseling. I assisted with the school's kindergarten
screening and am conducting counseling groups.
Melissa Zywocinski:
I'm currently in my
second quarter at School #8 in the Rochester City School District. I
continue to learn a lot and each day brings something new. I am
getting a lot of assessment experience which is very beneficial. As
we learn about different topics in class, I get to see these topics
in action at my placement. It has been exciting and I look forward to
spending a few more weeks at School #8.
