Course Conversion Support from Teaching and Learning Services
According to the Provost, "Since all current academic offerings will need to undergo revisions to meet a 15-week delivery schedule, there is no better time to review and refresh our entire portfolio of programs."
Teaching & Learning Services (TLS) in The Wallace Center looks forward to supporting RIT Faculty during quarter-to-semester course conversion. Our experienced Instructional Design Consultants will work with you to design or redesign courses for semesters and integrate best practices for student success, such as:
- Exploring new teaching strategies and activities
- Incorporating technology and media support your learning outcomes
Look for announcements as additional course conversion resources become available.
Consultation with departments and programs
Faced with a program map of semester courses to design and develop, individual programs or entire departments may want to explore a holistic approach to conversion before assigning courses to faculty to redesign. A TLS Instructional Design Consultant can work with groups to develop an overall course conversion strategy and plan.
To talk with an Instructional Design Consultant about course conversion, contact the Teaching & Learning Services team or call 475-2551.
Course redesign models
This spring, there will be two main chances to see examples of inventive course ideas and ways of incorporating new ideas as you redesign courses for semesters. One is an internal opportunity to find out about some innovative course designs at RIT. The other brings an outside expert in course redesign with experience in quarter-to-semester conversion to campus.

Course Redesign Workshop by Dennis Pearle, NCAT Redesign Scholar, Ohio State University
Faculty workshops: Wednesday April 18, 1:30–3:30 and Thursday April 19, 1:30–3:30
This workshop will focus on the speaker's experience redesigning his multi-section course, Introductory Statistical Concepts, using the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) model of course redesign and again revising the course for Ohio State's quarter-to-semester system conversion. This workshop will focus on faculty's primary role in redesign and the impact of Q2S conversion on course design.
The National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides leadership in using information technology to redesign learning environments to produce better learning outcomes for students. NCAT's Redesign Scholars Program links those new to course redesign with more experienced colleagues.

These events are available for all full-time faculty at RIT.
Workshops and Events
Laying the Foundation for Semester Conversion
Four days, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, with optional afternoon work sessions
The Summer Conversion Workshop can help faculty take advantage of the unique opportunity presented by course conversion by exploring design ideas that go beyond reconfiguring and combining course content to "fit" a 15-week schedule. During these four days, faculty can begin critical work on designing their semester course with an eye toward incorporating different teaching methodologies, technologies and approaches.
In this workshop, you'll develop a teaching strategy for your semester-long course and begin putting it together in a myCourses shell. After the structured morning session, the TLS lab will be open so you can continue working, with Instructional Design Consultants on hand to help you as needed.
