Public Impact of Scientific Images:
Examples from Earth and Space Science

Abstract: Dynamic and artistic imagery of earth and space capture the imagination and stimulate the public's interest in scientific findings. We have learned that if we persistently share our new research results showcased through imagery the public is more inclined to support our efforts. Today, the physical sciences must compete with healthcare, security, and social science issues to obtain suitable funding. The use of imagery is one powerful tool that can be used to raise public awareness, improve public perception of science and thereby garner fiscal support for basic research.

Bio: Dr. Christian is a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and on partial detail as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Department of State. She is examining methods for deploying simple interfaces to satellite imagery and geographic information (map systems that depict information such as roads, terrain, vegetation, population density, temperature, soil content, etc.) for diplomatic and foreign policy use by State users. Other responsibilities include documenting telecommuting experiences within State, assessing the usefulness of video streaming (webcasting), and various web-based technologies. She joined State in October, 2003. She is the Education Director for the National Virtual Observatory at STScI and the Johns Hopkins University. Previously at STSci she served as the Head of the Office of Public Outreach and also managed a division devoted to innovation and emerging technology use. Before her detail to State, she was the Deputy Head of the Community Missions office at Space Telescope.
