Dr. Sophia Maggelakis Dean of the College of Science
Professor of Applied Mathematics

Welcome to RIT's Women in Science (WISe) program! WISe plays a central role in contributing to the engagement and advancement of women in the sciences and mathematics. The College of Science is home to a rich portfolio of strong and robust science and mathematics undergraduate and graduate programs, including three of RIT's seven Ph.D. programs, and it is known nationally and internationally for its innovative research and academic programs.

Our faculty is involved in the challenge of increasing awareness of issues that impede female students and faculty to achieve their full potential and of increasing female participation in science and mathematical science fields at all levels. Our mission is to recruit and educate female students for successful lifetime careers in these fields through networking, mentoring, collaboration, and breaking down barriers.

My own love and interest is mathematics. When I discovered this diverse discipline and its contributions to helping us understand the world around us, I fell in love with the beauty and power of the subject. It is fascinating to see how mathematics can be used to reveal hidden patterns, to deal with observations from science, to develop sophisticated mathematical models that describe real world systems, to test conjectures, and to deal with logical analysis and reasoning, deduction and proof.

Mission

WISe aims to foster love for the sciences and mathematics, to increase the participation and engagement of women in the sciences and mathematics, and to enable the advancement and success of women in these fields.

Goals
  • -To support women faculty through the different stages of their academic careers.
  • -To encourage women undergraduates and K-12 students to embrace science and mathematics.
  • -To increase awareness of issues that impede female students and faculty from achieving their full potential.
  • -To increase female student enrollments in our science and mathematical sciences programs through recruitment, retention, and alumni efforts.
  • -To create networking and mentoring opportunities for women in the College of Science.
  • -To increase awareness of the many rewarding career possibilities for women in all areas of science and mathematical sciences.
