DNA Detectives
July 25 - 29
Camp Description
Knowledge about DNA and genetics is changing our lives. We will spend the week exploring what DNA is, how it makes us each unique, and how it is used to identify people. Campers will become forensic investigators, using DNA and other types of evidence to solve crimes. They will learn to use the tools that we see on crime shows, and perhaps learn why sometimes things are not as simple as they seem on TV!
Sample Investigations
- What is DNA and where can you find it?
Campers will try to extract DNA from various sources. They will hypothesize which sources contain it (e.g. a strawberry? a hamburger? their own saliva?) and then test their hypotheses by actually performing DNA extractions in the lab and measuring their results with high-tech equipment. - How did I get this way?
Campers will survey their family members about a variety of genetic traits and then try to figure out how to explain their own characteristics based on the rules of genetics. - Who dunnit?
Campers will be introduced to a realistic crime scene and use their investigative skills to gather evidence, test their hypotheses and draw conclusions. They will learn to dust for fingerprints, examine hairs, produce and interpret DNA evidence, and use deductive reasoning to solve the crime.
Other Notes
Campers are expected to bring a lunch.
Snacks will be provided during the day.
Students should come dressed appropriately for travel around campus.
