Medical Science for High School Students
Program Description
The camps are designed for high school students (grades 9-11) who think they might be interested in a clinical or research career in medicine, and who would really enjoy a comprehensive exploration of human health and disease. The camps will include opportunities to meet clinicians and scientists and discuss careers in the medical and allied health professions. Each week will cover different topics, so students can choose to attend one or all of the sessions.
Medical Science I - Infectious Disease
July 11 - 15
The focus of this camp will be infectious disease. Students will participate in the collection and isolation of microorganisms, and they will learn many of the basic and sophisticated laboratory procedures for identifying and visualizing bacterial clones and for determining exposure rates. They will learn about infections, epidemics and how science is attempting to stay one step ahead of microbes in an arms race that threatens our very existence. (This session is full and registration is closed)
Medical Science II - Antibiotic Discovery and Enzymes
July 18 - 22
In the battle for survival the microbes seem to be winning. Infections that once took thousands of human lives are returning because they are becoming resistant to even our best antibiotics. In order to discover new antibiotics to fight these infections, researchers must first discover key target enzymes that are present in bacteria that are not associated with humans. Students will perform sophisticated laboratory experiments relating to the detection, isolation and measurement of enzyme activity from harmless bacteria. The goal will be to look for enzymes that might lead to the next generation of antibiotic drugs. (This session is full and registration is closed)
Medical Science III - Medicine and human disease
July 25 - 29
The focus of this camp will be on systemic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, metabolic disease and cancer. Students will conduct tests for measuring normal organ function and they will learn how to perform several routine diagnostic and medical laboratory procedures. They will also examine preserved human organs, both macroscopically and microscopically, and will learn how to distinguish healthy and diseased tissues. (This session is full and registration is closed)
